Gregory Michie spent 33 years as a public-school teacher and professor of education in Chicago. Over the course of his career he taught nearly every grade level, but most of his work was with middle schoolers. As a classroom teacher, he won the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1996 and was named Outstanding Middle Level Educator by the National Council of Teachers of English in 2020. He is the author of numerous books, including Same as It Never Was: Notes on a Teacher's Return to the Classroom, and Holler If You Hear Me: The Education of a Teacher and His Students. He has given numerous talks and presentations across the U.S. about his work with young people. Born and raised in North Carolina, he is a product of public schools from first grade through his doctoral program.
