L'eau des miroirs est un récit poétique, sans doute le premier par lequel Christian Bobin, alors jeune poète, prend sa voix. Or, c'est une femme qui nous parle. Elle se meurt, délaissée par son amant. Et tandis que la mort froide s'étend sur elle, elle raconte l'amour qui l'a liée à un homme vivant reclus parmi ses livres. De cette situation très romanesque sourd déjà toute la richesse de l'œuvre en gestation : la rupture avec le monde, les mots du désir charnel, la nature salvatrice où s'abandonner.
