Description

This is no ordinary book on how to overcome an eating disorder. The authors bravely share their unique stories of suffering from and eventually overcoming their own severe eating disorders. Interweaving personal narrative with the perspective of their own therapist-client relationship, their insights bring an unparalleled depth of awareness into just what it takes to successfully beat this challenging and seemingly intractable clinical issue. For anyone who has suffered, their family and friends, and other helping professionals, this book should be by your side. With great compassion and clinical expertise, Carolyn Costin and Gwen Schubert Grabb walk listeners through the ins and outs of the recovery process, describing what therapy entails, clarifying the common associated emotions such as fear, guilt, and shame and, most of all, providing motivation to seek help if you have been discouraged, resistant, or afraid. The authors bring self-disclosure to a level not yet seen in an eating disorder book and offer hope that full recovery is possible.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Carolyn Costin was my eating disorder therapist, and I credit her with my recovery. 8 Keys gives the reader the same insight, inspiration, and tools that Carolyn gave to me. It's straightforward, well-written, and allows the reader to actively participate in her own recovery. I highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling with an eating disorder." (Portia de Rossi)

I am more aware that there is definitely HOPE !

I seriously liked the part about Ego and have in the past 50+ years that it is only me who suffers. As a victim of rape at 5 years old, which resulted in destroying my body through self abuse for most of my life, inner healing is now more important than ever! I fractured both legs 3 times by working out till I passed out and walked 100 blocks every day. As a diabetic since my early 20's, it was an ongoing nightmare and finally got hospitalized by an Eating Disorders Psychiatrist. I remember sitting in her office in complete denial as she pointed out the casts I was wearing on both legs at which she said, "Why do you believe that you aren't really sick?" I replied, "Well I'm not that bad as the others who get tube fed.."
Therapy with her in Hospital was definitely very hard but I seen how bad it can get and that I did need Intervention.
I'm now 60 years old and swim only 20 minutes and set my walking at a limit.
I now understand how much I've damaged my body as I also suffer from Diverticulitis, Asthma, and Chronic Pain in both legs for which I take Morphine to relieve the excruciating pain everyday if I walk beyond 3000 steps.
I now live one day at a time, and have become a published poet and short story Author. I eat when I'm hungry or till I'm full and learned how to count Carbohydrates minus the fiber so that I can calculate the right amount of insulin each meal. I'm ok with my weight these days and no longer step on the scale!
