Description

War has begun. Arin is in the thick of it, with the East as his ally and the empire as his enemy. He's finally managed to dismiss the memory of Kestrel, even if he can't quite forget her. Kestrel turned into someone he could no longer recognize: someone who cared more for the empire than for the lives of innocent people - and certainly more than she cared for him. At least that's what he thinks.

But far north lies a work camp where Kestrel is a prisoner. Can she manage to escape before she loses herself?

As the war intensifies, both Kestrel and Arin discover unexpected roles in battle, terrible secrets, and a fragile hope. The world is changing. The East is pitted against the West, and Kestrel and Arin are caught between. In a game like this, can anybody really win?

The good overwhelmingly outweighs the bad.

WOW. Fantastic end to the series. Talk about character development!

I have to say, Justine Eyre is not a good narrator for me. There is a whine to the end of her sentences that drives me right up the wall. When I see that a book is narrated by her, I usually just pass it by or grab it in print.

However, two things redeemed this entire audiobook series for me. First, the ability to speed up the narration on an iPod. Listening at 1.5x fixed the whine problem enough to let the story take over. I was never pulled out of the story because I was distracted by the narration. Secondly, Eyre's use of accents was superb. One of my favourite things about this series is that she starts off with the main character having an accent. The story places the main character in a foreign country (to her) and the natives to the country are the ones without an accent. I love the way she turned this around from what would have usually be done. It's as if we begin with the invaders of our own country, which is exactly the way the author intended it to be.

I've done a complete video review of this series that you can find on my YouTube channel (link to that is in my profile). I highly recommend this YA series. And I'm ready to go back and listen to some of my other titles narrated by Justine Eyre - at 1.5x speed. I have a feeling I'm going to like them the second time around.

Disappointed ending

As usual, the narrator did a great job. She has easy flow between changing of characters. The book was good but what led up to what could have been a better ending of the book. That is what disappointed me most was the ending. I hate reading a series that I grow to love all the characters and then it has a lackluster ending. Frustrating but the writer could have done it in order to write another book if she wanted since nothing was truly resolved.

Such a Great Story

This whole series was awesome! The narrator did a splendid job with the voices. I definitely got lost in the story.

Great story. Very original.

Loved loved this sorry. But you'll have to get past the narrators annoying voice. Her "sultry" voice--eh, not for me.

Worth the listen

The story was enjoyable all the way through with enough twists that you didn't quite see what would happen next even when you thought you knew for sure. The narrator was outstanding. Her flexibility in vocal sounds and accents was wonderful and allowed me to feel more like I was there in the story. Well done

Loved book 1 and 2, 3 not so much...

The first two books were enjoyable reads with twists and turns that made it hard to put down. This book did not deliver on that front. While there were some good moments, most of the book was dull and boring. I had high hopes for this book, but I often found myself trying to decide whether I would even bother listening to the rest of the book.

Captivating

Now THIS is a sequel! The character arc is fantastic, the storyline interesting, and it has that spark of development and tension that is so often missing in second books. The narration is pleasant and easy on the ears. Two fairy talons up.

One of the best narrations I've ever listened

I liked this trilogy and yet what made me to love it was Justine Eyer's narration. I can't imagine it without her voice and accents. I fell in love with Arin's voice especially :) will miss it greatly. All these raw emotions and feelings, all characters were so alive. Don't know how to express my gratitude. For the author who wrote this story and for the team who made this audiobook.

Good conclusion to a great series

I really like the story in this series. The narrator makes it so much better. I love her accents and voices. They bring the story to life in a way that you wouldn't get reading it yourself. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a little forbidden romance.

Loved this ending of a great series

What did you love best about The Winner's Kiss?

A very good end to a great series.

What did you like best about this story?

The first 75% was fantastic....then the end was a bit slow. Too much war. But still, the romance resolved beautifully.
