Pronghorn antelope, gray wolves, bison, coyotes, wild horses, and grizzly bears: less than 200 years ago these creatures existed in such abundance that John James Audubon was moved to write "it is impossible to describe or even conceive the vast multitudes of these animals". In a work that is at once a lyrical evocation of that lost splendor and a detailed natural history of these charismatic species of the historic Great Plains, veteran naturalist and outdoorsman Dan Flores draws a vivid portrait of each of these animals in their glory - and tells the harrowing story of what happened to them at the hands of market hunters and ranchers and, ultimately, a federal killing program in the 19th and 20th centuries.

A glimpse into a great era

As an outdoorsman I believe everyone in North America should read this book (among countless other great books). At the bare minimum this is a must read for the outdoorsman or anyone that works in or is interested in; conservation, nature, ecology, and western history etc.

Should be a required reading for North Americans!

This book is absolutely tremendous. It tells the amazing history of the great plains of North America before European colonization, and of the mega fauna that used to roam. The book goes into the decline of the 5 top animals of the prairies after the European colonization and the extirpation of nearly all of them. It is both fascinating and heartbreaking. #Audible1

Loved it. A part of history not taught in school. I reccomend his other book Coyote America. Both have an immense amount of knowledge to ponder.
