Description

Around the world humans are hallucinating after sleepless nights.

In a sterile, underground institute the forecasters keep reporting the same events.

And in the backwoods of Texas, a 16-year-old girl is about to be caught up in a fierce, ethereal battle.

Meet Roya Stark. She drowns every night in her dreams, spends her hours reading classic literature to avoid her family's ridicule, and is prone to premonitions - which are becoming more frequent. And now her dreams are filled with strangers offering to reveal what she has always wanted to know: Who is she? That's the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out. But will Roya live to regret learning the truth?

Love this series

I'm not sure where this story sits in the Dream Traveller series. According to the list of Dream Traveller books it's the first book in the series. However, I've listened to many of the books in this series and recognize names and locations from those other books. Now, part of the Dream Traveller world is the ability to travel in time as well as space in a way, so maybe it's one of those situations. Maybe not.

Awoken is the first book in the Lucidites trilogy. Roya is a young girl who suddenly finds out that she is a Dream Traveller. She is told that for her safety, and because she is the champion they need to fight a bad Dream Traveller who is affecting the minds of others - mostly those without the Dream Traveller ability, she must come to the Lucidite Institution and train there to duel with this man, Zhuang.

Roya is a teenager with all the teenage angst plus the hurt that comes from a family that doesn't understand her, and really doesn't seem to care about her. So, she comes to the Institute with an attitude. At the Institute she learns more about her gifts and how to work with a team of other Dream Travellers in order to try and beat Zhuang. She finds herself attracted to one of the technicians at the Institute as well as a fellow team member. She also finds out a lot about who she is.

The one thing I didn't really like about the story was the love triangle plot line. I kept thinking that the technician was going to turn out to be one of the bad guys; that he was actually manipulating Roya through a gift of some sort. I get the confusion of young, first love, especially to a young person who hasn't seen a lot of love and kindness in her life, and maybe that's why there is this character, but it wasn't my favourite part of the book.

I did like Roya's growth and development throughout the book, and am eager to launch into the second in the trilogy.
