À propos de cet audio

It was hell's season, and the air smelled of burning children.... With "one of the most arresting first sentences in contemporary writing" (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), Robert McCammon unfurls his visionary masterpiece of survival, redemption, and the astonishing transformations love can create. Gone South chronicles a desperate man's journey through a desperate land, in "a gothic picaresque that mixes gritty plot and black comedy...a smoothly constructed and satisfying story" (The Wall Street Journal). Flooded by memories, poisoned by Agent Orange, Dan Lambert kills a man in a moment of fear and fury - and changes his life forever.

Pursued by police and bounty hunters, Dan flees south toward the Louisiana bayous. In the swamplands he meets Arden Halliday, a young woman who bears the vivid burdens of her own past and who is searching for a legendary faith healer called the Bright Girl. Looking for simple kindness in a world that rarely shows it, bound by a loyalty stronger than love, Dan and Arden set off on a journey of relentless suspense and impassioned discovery...over dark, twisting waterways into the mysterious depths of the human heart.

this is the 2nd book I heard with george newburn narrating. he is easy to listen too and adds great depth to the characters. the story is slow at times and I briefly wondered where he was going with it but was a wild ride and another fantastic story from Mr McCammon who never fails to deliver

deep and rich

Swan Song will always be one of my favorite novels ever, and after recently reading Boy’s life, there’s no doubt that McCammon is one of the best to ever do it.

Gone South is my fourth McCammon book, and I absolutely adored every second of it and didn’t want it to end. Every character was rich in depth, and the story was never felt dull at any moment, bringing you further into this amazing world.

Dan & Arden’s journey feels authentic, and you really want everything to work out for them, all the while having normally absurd characters feel right at home in this crazy world.

I will definitely read this book again at some point & would recommend it to any fan of brilliant storytelling. 5/5

Another brilliant story by one of the best!

What did I love? Well exactly everything... except the fate of the dog =( This story grabbed me right from the start and never let up. At times I found myself talking to the author pleading for things not to happen even though they seemed inevitable. I even ended up cheering for the bounty hunters several times which surprised me and I loved the eventual way their relationship evolved. Way to go Pelvis! Robert McCammon certainly spins a yarn so well it's as if I become part of the tale. There are characters I genuinely cared about and some truly nasty bad guys. There's suspense, action and some surprisingly tender moments. The ending was wonderfully satisfying and completely unexpected...and the narrator knocked it out of the park! This has become one of my favorite listens.

Content warning: the remembered scenes from the Vietnam war were horrifying and may be triggers for some listeners
