The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn’s startling book led, almost 30 years later, to Glasnost, Perestroika, and the "Fall of the Wall". One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich brilliantly portrays a single day, any day, in the life of a single Russian soldier who was captured by the Germans in 1945 and who managed to escape a few days later. Along with millions of others, this soldier was charged with some sort of political crime, and since it was easier to confess than deny it and die, Ivan Denisovich "confessed" to "high treason" and received a sentence of 10 years in a Siberian labor camp.

These 36 lectures tell the remarkable story of a tumultuous thousand-year period in the history of England. Dominated by war, conquest, and the struggle to balance the stability brought by royal power with the rights of the governed, it was a period that put into place the foundation of much of the world we know today. As you journey through this largely chronological narrative you'll see key themes emerge, including the assimilation of successive waves of invaders, the tense relationship between kings and the nobility, and the constant battles over money and taxation.

There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. The Peloponnesian War pitted Athens and its allies against a league of city-states headed by Sparta. The ancient Greek historian Thucydides captured this drama with matchless insight in his classic eyewitness account of what was arguably the greatest war in the history of the world up to that time. These 36 half-hour lectures draw on Thucydides' classic account as well as other ancient sources to give you a full picture of the Greek world in uneasy peace and then all-out war in the late 5th century B.C.

When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel", "Hansel and Gretel", and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style.

Histoire
Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is universally regarded as one of literature's finest achievements, as the great Russian novelist explores the inner workings of a troubled intellectual. Raskolnikov, a nihilistic young man in the midst of a spiritual crisis, makes the fateful decision to murder a cruel pawnbroker, justifying his actions by relying on science and reason, and creating his own morality system. Dehumanized yet sympathetic, exhausted yet hopeful, Raskolnikov represents the best and worst elements of modern intellectualism. The aftermath of his crime and Petrovich's murder investigation result in an utterly compelling, truly unforgettable cat-and-mouse game. This stunning dramatization of Dostoevsky's magnum opus brings the slums of St. Petersburg and the demons of Raskolnikov's tortured mind vividly to life.

A very good story
- Écrit par JohnS le 2020-12-28
Description
In the newest installment of the best-selling series Mythos, legendary author and actor Stephen Fry moves from the exploits of the Olympian gods to the deeds of mortal heroes.
Perseus. Jason. Atalanta. Theseus. Heracles. Rediscover the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths. Whether recounting a tender love affair or a heroic triumph, Fry deftly finds resonance with our own modern minds and hearts.
- Each adventure is infused with Fry's distinctive voice and writing style.
- Connoisseurs of the Greek myths will appreciate this fresh-yet-reverential interpretation, while newcomers will feel welcome.
- Retellings brim with humor and emotion.
"Mostly Chiron saw in the child, and the young man he became, boundless courage, athleticism, intelligence, and ambition. He saw too lots of words beginning with 'self', which gave him pause. Self-belief, self-possession, self-righteousness, self-confidence, self-love. Perhaps these characteristics are as necessary to a hero as courage."
In Heroes, Fry draws out the humor and pathos in both tender love affairs and heroic battles, and reveals each myth's relevance for our own time.

Certainly glad there are no tests or quizzes along the way with all the family trees covered! These are great stories told in a very entertaining way. As for the narration, well-paced, nuanced with the action and very comforting to the ear. I'm sure he could make the alphabet sound entertaining. Good, not great
Stephen fry does an admirable job narrating. And a more then good job writing the story. Unfortunately the book is little too complex and the story suffers. The first half of the book is almost a perfect listen, offering a nice balance of story and historical information and moves along effortlessly. The second half starts to suffer from too much explanation of who all the characters are and how they relate to one another. I know it’s important that people know who is who but it gave me the impression that the author was in a hurry to finish the book half way through. Still, I have paid to listen far worse books than this one.

Fantastical Mr. Fry
Fry is my favorite. This is yet another albeit one of his best examples of writing, acting, research, creativity and overall entertaining. He blends beautifully legend, myth, history, fact, fiction and pure imaginative genius so well even I a simpleton can enjoy the creation, learn from it and mostly sit in awe of all I don't know, didn't know and don't understand but now at least have a grasp of and all the while loving the journey as Fry's amazing voices play it all out in my head. Like story time with a grandfather
I loved everything about Mythos, so this was a must when I saw it available. Fry does a masterful job of bringing the classic stories of Greek heroes to life in a way that is relatable, easy to follow, and feels modern. The way he builds in conversations over the breakfast table between Zeus and Hera to cover backstory necessary to a larger one is both highly entertaining and commendable as a way of making these gods and goddesses more accessible and relatable to the reader. Whether you’ve studied mythology extensively or are just picking it up for the first time, Fry’s series is one that I recommend for its roots in scholarly research and adaptation for the casual reader.

I grew up reading the stories of Greek myth, the childhood versions toned down for a younger audiences.
