Description

The Wolfman is one of the great classics of modern horror. Now, based on the upcoming film, is a terrifying new novel written by Jonathan Maberry, based on the screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker and David Self based on a motion picture screenplay by Curt Siodmak.

Lawrence Talbot's childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother's fiancée tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector has come to investigate.

As Talbot pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature that stalks the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself . . . one he never imagined existed.

I Would Pay At The Box Office

This is a pretty formulaic horror movie script centred in stereotypical England. Here is the foggy little town on the Moors, there are the clichéd creepy denizens with bad teeth stepping suddenly out from the shadows. Rumors of a marauding beast fill the pipesmoke-filled pub. The horror movie clichés continue: animals shockingly jump out of the bushes during scenes of tension.. there is an insane asylum in the plot somehow.. bodies are found sticky with dripping blood and intestines. Still, I am *sometimes* in the mood for an overworked "scare" - no matter how contrived. I was looking for a werewolf story without some of the stupid (Post-Apocalyptic storylines, straight-up Shock-Gore; Romance; etc.) - and I found it. This isn't "frightening"per se.. but it's a good old-fashioned gory horror story.
This interpretation from Jonathan Maberry both benefits and suffers from the limitations set by using a screenplay for a template: the story is told quite literally with "scenes" - vividly descriptive and immediately mood-inducing, but also strikingly superficial (the goal is to quickly move the plot forward, not generate a realistic character motivation).
Maberry effectively translates those scenes into workable book chapters, however. His descriptions are spot-on and dialogue is believable. He also makes an admirable attempt to make the characters relatable (the protagonist, Lawrence Talbot, is still 2-dimensional for example, but filled out more than a movie could acheive). The novelization isn't amazing, but it’s satisfactory.

Fred Berman's reading is the strongest aspect of this audiobook. His emotiveness, pacing, and timbre are exemplary. He has a subdued, somewhat whispery delivery that fits the text perfectly. His accents (English, French, Romanian, Indian, American) are not overdone. I would listen to more from a professional like Berman anytime.

I have no idea if this was released theatrically.. if it was, I must have missed it. It likely didn't play for long - and that's appropriate. 'The Wolfman' is a little too "Hollywood" - including some nonsensical nudity and sex scenes for example. But I'm up for an unoriginal Hollywood movie sometimes. If you are, too - make some popcorn. Go ahead and spend the Credit on this admittedly banal 6.5 out of 10 star offering.. if you're looking for "literature" - spend it elsewhere.
