Stan and Charmaine are a married couple trying to stay afloat in the midst of an economic and social collapse. Job loss has forced them to live in their car, leaving them vulnerable to roving gangs. They desperately need to turn their situation around—and fast. The Positron Project in the town of Consilience seems to be the answer to their prayers. No one is unemployed and everyone gets a comfortable, clean house to live in . . . for six months out of the year. On alternating months, residents of Consilience must leave their homes and function as inmates in the Positron prison system.

Part detective novel, part psychological thriller, Surfacing is the story of a talented woman artist who goes in search of her missing father on a remote island in northern Quebec. Setting out with her lover and another young couple, she soon finds herself captivated by the isolated setting, where a marriage begins to fall apart, violence and death lurk just beneath the surface, and sex becomes a catalyst for conflict and dangerous choices. Surfacing is a work permeated with an aura of suspense, complex with layered meanings, and written in brilliant, diamond-sharp prose.

Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed.

Description
The long-awaited new novel from Margaret Atwood. The Year of the Flood is a dystopic masterpiece and a testament to her visionary power. The times and species have been changing at a rapid rate, and the social compact is wearing as thin as environmental stability. Adam One, the kindly leader of the God's Gardeners - a religion devoted to the melding of science and religion, as well as the preservation of all plant and animal life - has long predicted a natural disaster that will alter Earth as we know it. Now it has occurred, obliterating most human life. Two women have survived: Ren, a young trapeze dancer locked inside the high-end sex club Scales and Tails, and Toby, a God's Gardener barricaded inside a luxurious spa where many of the treatments are edible.
Have others survived? Ren's bioartist friend Amanda? Zeb, her eco-fighter stepfather? Her onetime lover, Jimmy? Or the murderous Painballers, survivors of the mutual-elimination Painball prison? Not to mention the shadowy, corrupt policing force of the ruling powers...
Meanwhile, gene-spliced life forms are proliferating: The lion/lamb blends, the Mo'hair sheep with human hair, the pigs with human brain tissue. As Adam One and his intrepid hemp-clad band make their way through this strange new world, Ren and Toby will have to decide on their next move. They can't stay locked away...
By turns dark, tender, violent, thoughtful, and uneasily hilarious, The Year of the Flood is Atwood at her most brilliant and inventive.

Loved it
Engrossing, imaginative, and captivating. The characters Atwood creates, especially the two protagonists, are so relatable yet fascinating.

Thoughtful and Smart
Margaret Atwood created a true to life story of what could happen. I found the story telling compelling and believable. I developed great empathy for the characters and it has impacted me in how I think about climate change and the future.

Captivating story telling with great narrators.
As the second book of a trilogy, The Year of the Flood is by far my favourite of the series. Of course reading is one thing, however, as an avid listener, I find the musical breaks at the end of the chapters to be distracting and almost dislodging. I understand the reasoning for giving Adam a voice, however the style and genre of abruptly yet quickly predictable music takes away from the fantasy that I have grown to love from audiobooks.
Yes to every narrator in this book - no to unnecessary songs that an incredible book does not require.

While this trilogy remains one of my Atwood favorites, the narration leaves something to be desired. It starts quite distorted, as if the female individual has her lips pressed directly up against the microphone. The male who performs in this does a better job of reading the story. But once the female starts again, it it incredibly distracting and hard to follow.
If you are an Atwood fan, the first in the series, "Oryx and Crake" has a much better narration. I am hoping the third book, "Maddadam" is worth the money.

Thought provoking, wrenching, sometimes goofy
A great follow up to the concepts and setting established in Oryx and Crake. The story allows too many coincidences to be believed, with its main characters happening upon one another over and over. Overall a worthwhile book. Looking forward to reading the next one.
Great performances, though Ren was sometimes very flat and I could feel the book being read to me.

Fascinating and true to our possible future
I didn’t read the first book yet, I began here. This would make a good movie. I ff the songs. Too long and preachy. But the book was great!

Great book two!
Really enjoyed this. Honestly the only part I don’t like is the occasional singing hymns — which I always always always skipped because they were immensely annoying and useless. But I still liked the book and would absolutely recommend this.
