Histoire
The Unfolded World is a bitter and unfriendly place for Daniel Carter and Emily Lovecraft. In this world the Cold War never happened because the Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1941. In this world the Nazi Großdeutschland is the premier superpower and is not merely tolerated but indulged because, in this world, the Holocaust happened behind the ruins of the Iron Curtain and consumed only Bolsheviks, Communists, and others the West was glad to see gone. In this world there are monsters, and not all of them are human.

Kell is one of the last Travelers - magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes. As such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.

Short stories for fans of the necromancer.
Exactly as on the label. The writing of JL Howard combines the humour of Pratchet with the cosmic horror of Lovecraft, all presented with the structure of pulp fiction.

Great listen, Wonderful short stories
I love the Johannes Cabal novels.
The short stories are great for quick rides in the car.
The best part about the stories are the clever way Herr Cabal finds a way out of the many traps and the adventures he goes through.
If you are a fan of the series, you must listen.
To the newcomer, if you like dark humor and fantasy stories, it is a fun adventure full of intelligent puns and sneering sarcasm.
You just might find that you love it!

Cabal's Shorter Adventures Don't Disappoint
This is the second time that I have listened to this collection of short stories. The first time was after I had finished the fifth Johannes Cabal novel, The Fall of the House of Cabal. While none of these stories are necessary to the enjoyment of the novels, reading/listening to them provides background on several characters and events.
When I first listened, I was concerned about the order of the stories. They are not told in the order of publication, and I was certain that this was incorrect. I was mistaken. The order of the stories in this audiobook is chronological in Cabal's world.
Thus the question becomes, when should I listen to this audiobook?
The first 3 stories occur before Johannes Cabal the Necromancer. The rest are most likely before Johannes Cabal: the Fear Institute. So I would recommend listening to this after the second book, Johannes Cabal the Detective. At the very latest, it should be experienced before The Fall of the House of Cabal because a character appears in the final story of this collection whose relationship with Cabal is so very out of his usual idiom that the reader/listener will be mad with curiosity as to how they met.
A second reason to listen after book 2 is that it will give the listener a chance to get used to the different performer. Nicholas Guy Smith does an admirable job with Cabal and he reads this collection and books 3 through 5. But he is very different from Christopher Cazenove who read the first 2 books. The short stories will allow the listener to ease into the change at their own pace.
All in all, this was a fantastic edition of some great stories.

Great fun for short term bursts.
I'm not usually a fan of short stories. The author explains that he grew up being a fan of the format during his forward. He must have learned some great lessons from those short stories of his childhood; this collection is great.

Mostly Great!
I was bummed at first when the narrative actor switched, but Mr. Smith has grown to be my favorite rendition of the pithy, ostentatious Heir Cabal.
I like all of these shorts; and like the author, often prefer short story anthologies. The Long Spoon would be my favorite in this case-5*. The rest are between 3&4.5. Definitely worth the listen.
It was ideal for me, as a realtor, to be able to enjoy one of my favorite anti-heroes single adventures all in a days intermittent work. And the. Again the next!

A satchel of gleaming, charmingly arcane literary jewels.
Jonathan L. Howard (an author of some little infamy) is one of my absolute favorites, so I had almost unreasonably high expectations for these short stories. They were, if anything, exceeded. If you-- like me-- are a sucker for amusing simile (e.g. "The realization dropped on him like a wet wooly mammoth") and dry humor, I'm sure you will be equally delighted by these little windows into Johannes' continuing adventures. Happy listening!

Can't go wrong
With great narration and fantastic writing these stories will give your mind quite the chew toy. As a self confessed agresive mental chewer I need something that is not only palatable but also surpringly durable from start to finish. No matter how much I get I can never get enough of Cabal. The ideas of the writer are always welcome and are usually a novelty. Being bored of the same old hum drum it's refreshing to be able to have my complete attention in these page-turners or should I say ear benders. I didn't like the idea that I may not be getting all of something that's out there seeing these short stories combined to 1 audio book had me happy at one point in time you couldn't find the stories just anywhere. I I'm thankful to have them and enjoyed every minute I also love the narrator.
