Histoire
This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

Description
Jack Aubrey returns from his duties protecting whalers off South America and is persuaded by a casual acquaintance to make investments in the City on the strength of supposedly certain information. This innocent decision ensnares him in the London criminal underground and in government espionage - the province of his friend Stephen Maturin. Is Aubrey's humiliation and the threatened ruin of his career a deliberate plot?

Somehow, Tears
Somehow one of the least “naval” episodes of Aubrey and Maturin hits hardest. I had tears in my eyes on the second-to-last chapter. BLOODY TEARS.

Needs to be read as part of the series
Good story in the context of the preceding books in the series. However it is mainly set ashore and would not be a good read if read alone.

Ric Jerrom
Ric Jerrom is a marvel. While I enjoyed the story it was Jerrom that really brings it to life. The number of characters he juggles effortlessly is incredible. I am a big fan of the Aubrey-Maturin series but I cant imagine listening to one without Jerrom. When I read one of O'Brians books I still hear Jerrom's Maturin and Aubrey.
