Description

From number one New York Times best-selling author Danielle Steel comes the gripping story of a woman who loses everything - her husband, her home, her sense of self and safety, and her freedom.

Sydney Wells' perfect life with her wealthy, devoted husband vanishes when he dies suddenly in an accident. Widowed at 49, she discovers he has failed to include her in his will. With Andrew's vicious daughters in control of his estate, and no home or money, Sydney finds a job in fashion, despite her own designer daughters' warnings. Naive, out of her element, and alone in a world of shady international deals and dishonest people, she is set up by her boss and finds herself faced with criminal prosecution.

What happens when you lose everything? Husband, safety, protection, money, and reputation gone, faced with prison, she must rebuild her own life from the bottom to the top again, with honor, resourcefulness, and dignity. Sydney finds herself, as well as courage and resilience. Taking life by the horns, she revives her own career as a talented designer, from New York to Hong Kong, risking all in an exotic, unfamiliar world. She is determined to forge a new life she can be proud of.

Doubtfully a Danielle Steele

I could not finish this book. The narrator trailed off at the end of his sentences and was very difficult to hear. The story itself was repetitive to the point of being very annoying, as the author told us the same things several times over. I finally gave up on hoping that this book was going to get better.

It was just ok

This booked was a typical DS. The tragic story of the rich and beautiful. I can’t say it held my interest but made a long drive a bit more interesting. #Audible1

My first DS book but not my last!

☆☆☆☆Stars. This was such a relatable story and I really liked all the characters. I did get a bit annoyed with all the repetition and a few times thought I somehow went backwards in the book. Overall I enjoyed it. Thanks #Audible1

Fall from Grace

A fascinating story of love in the fashion industry. Starts with a tragedy and develops into a story of triumph.

Wonderful read...

I truly enjoyed this book. I followed the story with compassion ad ease. Thank you Danielle Steel for delivering a winner. I highly recommend this book for the hopeless romantics.

Surprised this was on the New York Times bestseller list

[Spoilers ahead]

I chose this because of the above, but am a bit perplexed about why it is on the bestseller list.
It’s a cheap pot stirring story, where pieces of ‘bad news’ are just continually heaped on this flaccid archetypal “nice, rich lady”. She goes through all of this hardship because she never engaged in her financial status in her marriage, and then was framed for a crime because she took another rich guy at his word even after being warned off by a friend...

Then, as if this is the only satisfying ending, the nice rich lady meets a nice rich banker, who is impressed by her grace and can tell that “she’s very used to luxury, but has also experienced hardship in her life” because of the pain in her eyes, of some other bullshit. She never complains to this rich banker about her circumstances because, well, she’s a nice rich lady and they don’t complain. And this is good, because the readers all implicitly know that she will be saved from being middle class by this rich guy in the end, once she does the requisite few months of hardship in this stupid book. Can’t she, maybe briefly, find fulfilment in being single? Or, hell, in dating? She doesn’t even choose this guy, he swoops in and chooses her.

I was also a bit disgusted when her high flying daughter becomes engaged to a rich lawyer (of f*cking course), and the nice rich (but actually poor) lady is wringing her hands over the fact that she can’t pay for a lavish wedding for her thirty year old daughter. FFS, they can pay for it themselves!! Later her daughter “kindly offers” to -chip in-. Guess her rich lawyer fiancé isn’t helping, because we all know that the bride’s family pays for weddings. *Rolls eyes* What about the dowry??

This is the sort of cheap crap I would expect in something similar to Fifty Shades of Grey. However, don’t expect anything sexy either, the raunchiest thing that’s said is “She could feel his passion hard against her leg.” *Quietly retching*

This books celebrates feminine strength in a really dirty way; this character (who suffers hardship ONLY because of how flaccid she is) is only celebrated because she maintains her sweet demeanour the whole time.

Dependable Read

So what do I mean by my title? Danielle Steele’s books are my go to when I want entertainment. Her books are always good and the storylines are predictable. Sometimes that what i need in a book. Fall from Grace was a good read and I’d recommend it.

Audible book isn't easy to listen to

What disappointed you about Fall from Grace?

I didn't like that a man's voice was the story of a woman. I just couldn't get into it.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I didn't get to the end. It is very hard for me to listen to this book. I will be returning it.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Luis Moreno?

A woman.

What character would you cut from Fall from Grace?

I don't know because I couldn't get into the book due to the voice.

Any additional comments?

I love reading Danielle Steel books and own almost every one she has written in hard back and some of the older ones in paperback. I collect them. I love her work but I was very disappointed in the voice given to this book. Perhaps I would have been able to listen to it if it were a voice of a woman since it's a woman's story.

A sequel in the future?

This was a very enjoyable DS book!
The way it was written made you care for the characters very much. The ending left the door wide open for a 2nd book about the family. I hope Ms Steele will consider writing a sequel to this. I'd like to find out if Sydney and Bob get married in the future.

More twists and turns than a bowlful of spagetti

Loved this story. Strong female characters, enough tragedy to make you cry, the lead character just has to figure it out over and over again. What would you do if you were used to living a wealthy, entitled lifestyle. Then you suddenly lost it all. I loved the twists in this story.
