Histoire
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

The human soldiers stranded on the planet Paradise have been recruited into an alien legion to do the dirty jobs that the high-tech species won't do. Their first mission is to kick the enemy off a backwater planet no one cares about. It's a simple assignment, except everyone has a hidden agenda, and the planet could become a deathtrap.

My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

The Wizard's Council of Tarador was supposed to tell young Koren Bladewell that he is a wizard. Histoire
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. Good, but heavy lack of the Merry Band of Pirates
The book was good, and I get it was called Mavericks, but there was way too much focus (more than half the book) on the Mavericks team and a massive lack of the Merry Band of Pirates. Skippy and Joe are what keep me coming back to the series, and finding that half the book didn't have them was a little disappointing. I get there is a bigger story arc going on, but I still found the Mavericks team story could have been summarized into an halter or two and we could have had more Skippy :)
The audio performance was top notch as always.

Not really part of this series
This book is more of a off shot of the series with over 70% of the story having nothing to do with the series main characters. This should have been labeled as book 5.5 and the 30% that was needed for the main story ark included in book "6". I REALLY did not like the main story of this book, nor the characters.
Honestly Expeditionary Force is all about Skippy.

Redundancy
If your reading this you are entirely way to thorough or must have a big case of OCD. You already know this is a great space epic story. Consider this review a confirmation that that epic continues with this book as well.

Another excellent outing for the merry band
A very enjoyable new addition to the series ties together the threads of the Merry Band and the crew on Paradise. We are introduced to new aliens, see the Mavericks through an exciting voyage and very well imagined details of space combat, revisit an old stomping ground, and have more hilarious episodes with the famous beer can. A real page turner.

Another amazing entry in the series
Mr. Bray does ana amazing job of creating all the characters is the book. I am still amazed that it feels like two different characters talking when Skippy and Joe are arguing or insulting each other. And once again, I am sad to reach the end, and I am craving more.

Full circle
This amazing epic continues to keep you on the edge of your seat with every word.
Cathartic events will have tears in your eyes as you hear justice served and old wounds healed,
Character development deepens and heart strings tug harder along the way as the heroes hope for the best but plan for the worst.
A magnificent story in itself but as part of the series… the best so far.

Alanson teases, and then pulls a 3.5
This book is like 3.5 except that he listened to fans and made it a proper length book. The characters are fine and the story is interesting enough, but my issue with this installment (and it's a big one), is that he teases one of the most awesome and game changing elements in the series and then goes off to characters that AREN'T the Merry Band. It's just...painful knowing that we could be listening to THE most action packed and exciting chapter, only to have an adequate story forced on us instead.

A couple chapters of Skippy
I don't know about you, but I'm really only interested in the story revolving around the magnificent beer can. I don't really care about the refugees on Paradise and their attempts to prove to the hamsters how valuable they are. You can bypass this story and be fine.

Tricked by the sample audio into wasting a credit.
Hey! Joe and Skippy are back! As far as you know. Kidding! They're hardly there at all! But the audio sample got your credit! Psyche! It's nearly all about the Paradise team. Again. After dinging customers for a credit for a half book pretending to be a whole one, all with no Skippy or Joe in "Paradise," I'm beginning to think this author is a jerk as he nearly does it again, but at least with a whole book. Here's what I'm saying, though: Remember when you watched the first Matrix movie, and kept waiting for the sequels to do the first movie justice, but in the end you just wasted money on tickets for a long winded, crappy, confused ending that had lost track of its plot and it's characters? See where I'm going with this?
