Description

The remnants of the Expeditionary Force stranded on the alien-controlled planet "Paradise" get a chance to prove themselves, in a simple off-world training mission with a ship full of teenage alien cadets. When the mission goes horribly wrong and the survival of everyone on Paradise is at risk, the Merry Band of Pirates may have to come to the rescue. Unless they get killed first....

Good, but heavy lack of the Merry Band of Pirates

The book was good, and I get it was called Mavericks, but there was way too much focus (more than half the book) on the Mavericks team and a massive lack of the Merry Band of Pirates. Skippy and Joe are what keep me coming back to the series, and finding that half the book didn't have them was a little disappointing. I get there is a bigger story arc going on, but I still found the Mavericks team story could have been summarized into an halter or two and we could have had more Skippy :)

The audio performance was top notch as always.

Another excellent outing for the merry band

A very enjoyable new addition to the series ties together the threads of the Merry Band and the crew on Paradise. We are introduced to new aliens, see the Mavericks through an exciting voyage and very well imagined details of space combat, revisit an old stomping ground, and have more hilarious episodes with the famous beer can. A real page turner.

Good story, too much description during battles

Good story, started to tune out to some chapters which went way overboard on descriptive detail during battles.

Another amazing entry in the series

Mr. Bray does ana amazing job of creating all the characters is the book. I am still amazed that it feels like two different characters talking when Skippy and Joe are arguing or insulting each other. And once again, I am sad to reach the end, and I am craving more.

Shark jump approaches

Way too much not about Joe and Skippy. Perkins story was ok, but we listen for the beer can. Alanson needs to take it up a notch.

I love the series . I like all the parts of the book that was with Bishop and skippy. I seriously disliked the way to long part with Perkins.

I have a feeling the author wants to add more of this stuff in the future . Please don’t.

Bart Simpson the "I didn't do it" kid

I don't think I am going to finish the book. it is just way too much of the same. Ah, Joe... remember that problem I sort of mentioned might be a problem... Dammit Skippy, what now?! Joe figures out a solution, Skippy is embarrassed, Joe makes fun of Skippy, Skippy makes fun of Joe. Add some 80's TV and movie references, Skippy sings. Joe gets embarrassed and everyone laughs at him. ...AND repeat. And repeat, and repeat. I don't laugh anymore. I smile a little, but ultimately, its Bart Simpson's character run on Krusty's show as the I didn't do it kid. 4th time on stage, audience just stares at him and you hear someone cough.

It is lazy writing. I don't see how the reviews give this one such glowing rating numbers. Are people trying to be gentle with the authors feelings? When I put up a board to frame in a furnace duct, my client said it wasn't level. It was startling because she is a loud talker and came out side while I was cutting some drywall and politely shouted at me. (She just loud talked at me.) But it wasn't level. I was lazy, measured off the pipe and marked poorly. I got out my 4' level and made it right. Looks good now. It was level, I got lazy. This book is not very good. Other books in the series, laugh out loud fun.

If you liked the previous books in the series, don't get this book. If you tell someone their work isn't good enough. They will make it better. I would be very surprised if Craig Alanson is super satisfied with this book. Craig, this is falling off the rails. Get it back on dammit, because you can.

This Idea Backfired

I started listening to audiobooks at night because of my difficulty with sleeping. I figured, if I'm awake anyway I might as well make the most of it. Now I stay awake just to listen to this series....I can't stop...I figure 1 more chapter then I'll shut it off...then 1 more....and then I reason that I'll just find out what happens next then go to sleep...ok, 1 more chapter...this time I really mean it. One more book left...not sure where I'm going to get my fix after that....I'm sweating just thinking about it.

Please write more Merry Band of Pirates stories....otherwise I might just have to start sleeping again.

Trouble on Paradise pt. II

I think most fans agree that the true magic of this series is the Joe/Skippy dynamic. This book has relatively little of that. It rates a solid, "Meh". Save your credit.

Alanson teases, and then pulls a 3.5

This book is like 3.5 except that he listened to fans and made it a proper length book. The characters are fine and the story is interesting enough, but my issue with this installment (and it's a big one), is that he teases one of the most awesome and game changing elements in the series and then goes off to characters that AREN'T the Merry Band. It's just...painful knowing that we could be listening to THE most action packed and exciting chapter, only to have an adequate story forced on us instead.

A couple chapters of Skippy

I don't know about you, but I'm really only interested in the story revolving around the magnificent beer can. I don't really care about the refugees on Paradise and their attempts to prove to the hamsters how valuable they are. You can bypass this story and be fine.

Bait and switch?

This is like going to watch a star wars movie, expecting to see Luke and Han, but end up seeing jar jar. Love the series up to this point..

least favorite of the series

Love this series but this book fell short of expectations! R C killed it as always!!! wish we would have had more Joe, Skippy and the Pirates and less of the others. I understand why he did it and i enjoyed it... can't wait for more

Tricked by the sample audio into wasting a credit.

Hey! Joe and Skippy are back! As far as you know. Kidding! They're hardly there at all! But the audio sample got your credit! Psyche! It's nearly all about the Paradise team. Again. After dinging customers for a credit for a half book pretending to be a whole one, all with no Skippy or Joe in "Paradise," I'm beginning to think this author is a jerk as he nearly does it again, but at least with a whole book. Here's what I'm saying, though: Remember when you watched the first Matrix movie, and kept waiting for the sequels to do the first movie justice, but in the end you just wasted money on tickets for a long winded, crappy, confused ending that had lost track of its plot and it's characters? See where I'm going with this?

This one fell wwaaayyy short

I love the Skippy and Joe parts, but they had little to do with this one. Perkins team was 75%. Hate to say but I'm thinking of just returning this.

Pointless side story.

I was looking forward for so long for next book, hoping it was a continuation on the main story. Instead all we got was this filler book.

It’s a side story

It’s a side story. It starts off with the merry band and then veers. It should be a expeditionary force universe book not book 6

Not what I want from the series

RC Bray is good as usual. So full marks there. But I feel this should have been better advertised as a side story. I don’t care about these characters. I didn’t listen to the 3.5 book. And I actually don’t feel like completing this book.
