Description

The remnants of the Expeditionary Force stranded on the alien-controlled planet "Paradise" get a chance to prove themselves, in a simple off-world training mission with a ship full of teenage alien cadets. When the mission goes horribly wrong and the survival of everyone on Paradise is at risk, the Merry Band of Pirates may have to come to the rescue. Unless they get killed first....

Good, but heavy lack of the Merry Band of Pirates

The book was good, and I get it was called Mavericks, but there was way too much focus (more than half the book) on the Mavericks team and a massive lack of the Merry Band of Pirates. Skippy and Joe are what keep me coming back to the series, and finding that half the book didn't have them was a little disappointing. I get there is a bigger story arc going on, but I still found the Mavericks team story could have been summarized into an halter or two and we could have had more Skippy :)

The audio performance was top notch as always.

Another excellent outing for the merry band

A very enjoyable new addition to the series ties together the threads of the Merry Band and the crew on Paradise. We are introduced to new aliens, see the Mavericks through an exciting voyage and very well imagined details of space combat, revisit an old stomping ground, and have more hilarious episodes with the famous beer can. A real page turner.

Good story, too much description during battles

Good story, started to tune out to some chapters which went way overboard on descriptive detail during battles.

Another amazing entry in the series

Mr. Bray does ana amazing job of creating all the characters is the book. I am still amazed that it feels like two different characters talking when Skippy and Joe are arguing or insulting each other. And once again, I am sad to reach the end, and I am craving more.

Shark jump approaches

Way too much not about Joe and Skippy. Perkins story was ok, but we listen for the beer can. Alanson needs to take it up a notch.

More fun than a barrel of meat sacks.

I’m not going to say much about the story other than it was fun and cool to see the development of the personal relationships. But, the performance by R.C. Bray deserves an enthusiastic salute! I’ve listened to a number of books voiced by Bray and everyone of them is outstanding. In this book he tops everything. He handles so many characters that are so diverse. It’s spellbinding. He’ll have a selection where there’s male humans and female humans...young and old humans...aliens, male and female...male objects such as the co-protagonist of the story, Skippy, who resembles a shiny beer can. Bray sometimes has to assume 4 or 5 characters in a matter of seconds. It doesn’t sound rushed and he’s consistent with every character. I found it to be an extraordinary performance! I’m absolutely, 100%, primed for the next episode!

Nose dive

The book series has been really good up until this book. The amount of swearing and crude references really increased. I liked the other books because they were fairly clean and enjoyable. I will give the next book a try, but if it's anything like this one I won't be listening to the author's books anymore.

Alanson teases, and then pulls a 3.5

This book is like 3.5 except that he listened to fans and made it a proper length book. The characters are fine and the story is interesting enough, but my issue with this installment (and it's a big one), is that he teases one of the most awesome and game changing elements in the series and then goes off to characters that AREN'T the Merry Band. It's just...painful knowing that we could be listening to THE most action packed and exciting chapter, only to have an adequate story forced on us instead.

Trouble on Paradise pt. II

I think most fans agree that the true magic of this series is the Joe/Skippy dynamic. This book has relatively little of that. It rates a solid, "Meh". Save your credit.

A couple chapters of Skippy

I don't know about you, but I'm really only interested in the story revolving around the magnificent beer can. I don't really care about the refugees on Paradise and their attempts to prove to the hamsters how valuable they are. You can bypass this story and be fine.

Bait and switch?

This is like going to watch a star wars movie, expecting to see Luke and Han, but end up seeing jar jar. Love the series up to this point..

Tricked by the sample audio into wasting a credit.

Hey! Joe and Skippy are back! As far as you know. Kidding! They're hardly there at all! But the audio sample got your credit! Psyche! It's nearly all about the Paradise team. Again. After dinging customers for a credit for a half book pretending to be a whole one, all with no Skippy or Joe in "Paradise," I'm beginning to think this author is a jerk as he nearly does it again, but at least with a whole book. Here's what I'm saying, though: Remember when you watched the first Matrix movie, and kept waiting for the sequels to do the first movie justice, but in the end you just wasted money on tickets for a long winded, crappy, confused ending that had lost track of its plot and it's characters? See where I'm going with this?

This one fell wwaaayyy short

I love the Skippy and Joe parts, but they had little to do with this one. Perkins team was 75%. Hate to say but I'm thinking of just returning this.

Pointless side story.

I was looking forward for so long for next book, hoping it was a continuation on the main story. Instead all we got was this filler book.

60% not what I wanted.

I didn't truly enjoy this book until chapter 20. Very disappointed to say the least. Over half the story was about D-list characters I had no interest in. When the next book comes out, I'll be sure to wait for reviews before I waste my hard earned money.

It’s a side story

It’s a side story. It starts off with the merry band and then veers. It should be a expeditionary force universe book not book 6
