The Merry Band of Pirates offered the bad guys a ceasefire. We won’t mess with them, if they don’t mess with us. Easy, right? No. The aliens chose to do things the hard way. So, the Pirates are racing around the galaxy to clean up the threat to Earth. The infant UN Navy has their own mission with the Alien Legion: Get humanity some allies in the fight. And the Ethics & Compliance Office might have to do something...ethical. Unless they can find a way around it.

After saving the world many times, the Merry Band of Pirates have accepted the inevitable: Earth is doomed. All they can do is try to bring a few thousand people to safety, before vicious aliens arrive to destroy humanity's home world. No. There is one other thing they can do: hit the enemy so hard that the aliens will regret they ever heard of humans.

The problem with lying about having a super weapon is that the bad guys might believe they have nothing to lose by doing something stupid that both sides will regret. Or, they might just call your bluff. Either way, the Merry Band of Pirates need a plan to deal with the Fallout.

After the Renegade mission by the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman, the UN Expeditionary Force thought Earth was safe for hundreds of years, at least. After there was trouble on the home front and the president had to authorize a nuclear strike on an American city, UNEF decided they did need the Merry Band of Pirates again. So, the Flying Dutchman is sent out on a simple recon mission. But for the pirates, nothing is ever simple, and their mission will become Armageddon.

United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. While the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman have been trying to assure that hostile aliens do not have access to Earth, the UN Expeditionary Force has been stranded on the planet they nicknamed "Paradise". But Colonel Joe Bishop warns that they might not like what they find, and they can't do anything about it without endangering Earth.

Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

fantastic as usual with a hiccup
Part of the 15th chapter sounds like someone writing a social justice blog post. 99% of men don't have a "sexist brain" anymore then gay people have a gay brain. And the bit about Margret assuming Joe was racist over sun block was equally cringe worthy. you tellin me a battle hardened vet who has served with him for years as practically family would automatically assume he was racist the whole time? The rest of the story and RC Bray were great as usual but that chapter stuck out as preaching, really brought me out of the story until the next chapter.

Low expectations = great story
Before listening to brushfire, I read a lot of the negatives reviews. The last 2 books were feeling kinda stale as far as the storyline goes and I was given the impression that the author was just regurgitating the same story over and over. Keeping that in mind I gave up my months credit and was rewarded with an awesome story. This book breaths fresh air into what was becoming a stale story ( bishop, skippy & the merry band of pirates). I look forward to the next book and am cautiously optimistic. Thank you Craig Alanson & R.C. Bray.

Painful
Such a great series dragged down by a complete waste of a book.
There are funny parts but most is cringe worthy and skippable. If it wasn’t for the superb narration I would be returning this book and it is only because of the narration that I am going to finish listening to this abomination in an otherwise stellar series.
Let’s hope that the next in the series is the great redeemer.

Skip the first half unless you like teen dramas
The last three books could have been condensed into one. The first half of Brushfire was more of a teen romance then a science fiction novel. If it was not for the last portion of the book I would have rated the story a one star.
At this point I do not think I will purchase another book until the last one is produced. I will buy that one to see how the story ends. I do think I will miss much of the plot or of story development.
Note that I really enjoyed the first several books of the series. I was impressed when Skippy was mentioned in one of my favorite series; Bobiverse.
As always R.C. Bray is awesome!

A waste of a potential.
such a great series, but story is being dragged out in most painful way possible. over 50% of the book is just fillers. narrator (RC Bray) carries the book, but it's very unfortunate that author is interested in hitting a count for the series (15 or so books) rather than moving the story forward. if a significant number gets returned then they'll hear the message.

Disappointing
This book was disappointing but RC Bray was great. The story is disappointing. I feel that the last few books have a trend. One book is great then the next book is a setup for the next book. The setup book is disappointing. I thought previous book Critical Mass was a great book then this book is just a setup for the next book. It was a waist of time to pre-order this book. The author should not waist a whole book just to setup the next book.

1/2 of the book can be thrown out
A good 1/2 of the book is boring with filler material. Had an extended shore leave/romance plot that was just boring and could have been compressed. The whole plot can be summed up with the last few chapters, and the major plot was dragged out over a few chapters to the point where it just was a deus ex machina dragged out for too long. Nothing in the beginning was a foreshadowing nor did it contribute to the main plot.

Well performed.
The story is very compartmentalized over all. If you listen to the first 23 chapters, it's a relationship book. If you skip to chapter 24, the book is what you'd expect from the series, and the two halves don't meet up.
The expected wit is there, and I actually laughed out loud at a couple jokes, that was enjoyable. Like the last book, I really get a sense that the story has grown stale for the author, or he has serious insurmountable distractions. Shame really.

I’ve been an ardent fan of this series since the first book, but this...was disappointing to say the least. I understand you want to further develop your characters, but not at the cost of it being a sci-fi book. 75% of the book is just MEH

Feels like Columbus day again!
Already from the start it had different vibe then last couple of books, that's obviously great because for some time already Expeditionary force series is repetitive, boring and unimaginative. This feels like beginning again, plot is believable, conversations meaningful and plausible. Even the Skippy vs Bishop jokes are kinda cool again. So far I'm pleased whit the book after 4h of listening. Recommend, in opposite of last few from this series.

Definitely worth your time !
It just came out and I binged listened ! One of the better books in this series. Made me laugh out loud so many times. I enjoyed the cliffhanger at the end (unlike book 9) so I know the series will continue . The cast of characters makes this series great ! If you have never listened to this series , start with book one (chapter 10 is where it gets good) and move forward through the books from there- I look forward to more books and I am impressed that they continue to be well worth the time to listen. During this Pandemic, this series has truly saved me. Thank you Craig Alanson and R.C. Bray - you are both incredible people and the world is better with you in it !
