Description

The tale is told as if it's happening once upon a dream: the lovely maiden meets her handsome prince in the woods. The story has been told many times and in many ways. But always the maiden finds out that she is a princess - a princess who has been cursed by a dark fairy to prick her finger on a spindle and fall into an eternal sleep. Though her three good fairies try to protect her, the princess succumbs to the curse. But the power of good endures, as her true love defeats the fire-breathing dragon and awakens the princess with true love's first kiss. The two live happily ever after.

And yet this is only half the story. So what of the dark fairy, Maleficent? Why does she curse the innocent princess? What led to her becoming so filled with malice, anger, and hatred? Many tales have tried to explain her motives. Here is one account, pulled down from the many passed down through the ages. It is a tale of love and betrayal, of magic and reveries. It is a tale of the mistress of all evil.

Mistress Of Evil

Everyone knows the tale of sleeping beauty, the lovely maiden meets her handsome prince in the woods. The story has been told many times and in many ways. But always the maiden finds out that she is a princess-a princess who has been cursed by a dark fairy to prick her finger on a spindle and fall into an eternal sleep. Though her three good fairies try to protect her, the princess succumbs to the curse. But the power of good endures, as her true love defeats the fire-breathing dragon and awakens the princess with true love's first kiss. The two live happily ever after. but yet this is only half the story. So what of the dark fairy, Maleficent? Mistress of All Evil takes place directly after Unfortunate Souls. Like the first 3 books in the series, Mistress of All Evil not only gives you an origin story of the well-known Disney villain, but unique to this series is that they are all tied together by the three Wicked Sisters.

Maleficent
Valentino provides the back story of who Maleficent was as a child, her relation to the well known crows that faithfully follow her, and what went wrong to make Maleficent so evil. I quite pity Maleficent. She was orphaned and taken in by Nanny (look to the previous stories if you are unfamiliar with her), bullied and harassed by the 3 "good" fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather, and stereotyped by "Miss High and Mighty Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo." Maleficent only wanted to be a good fairy and earn her own child to be godmother of. Her sudden change to evil is akin to the 3 Wicked Sisters and their sudden change to insanity. I know Maleficent is meant to be a villain, but my heart cannot help but ache for her, especially after what she has been through. This story did a wonderful job at describing Maleficent and explaining how she became the villain we all know. I love how we not only dug deeper into Maleficent's past, but we also got to see other characters from the Sleeping Beauty world as well as characters from previous novels in the series. We observe abandonment, bullying and rejection but overall we witness prejudice against someone who is different and I feel it is this that really humanises Maleficent.Despite being quite a short book, I think Serena Valentino portrayed each character fabulously. As readers of previous novels of the series can probably surmise, Valentino's original Odd Sisters are involved, but so are several other characters.

The plot twist at the end was probably my favorite part of the book. I definitely did not see that coming! I think it was a great idea and it totally makes sense with the story. Contrary to Poor Unfortunate Soul: A Tale of the Sea Witch, I think the author did a great job at balancing other storylines and Maleficent's backstory. The book made me understand a lot of characters better, and I just love how she linked all the Disney stories I grew up loving. The level of detail in Valentino’s writing is superb. You can really picture the village in which Maleficent was raised- an experience that I haven’t felt in the previous tales. She also doesn’t neglect Aurora just because she is asleep but creates a dream world of mirrors that for some reason conjured images of Labyrinth for me. I also appreciated that, although snippets of the original story are included, they are just snippets- not a retelling.

#Audible1

I love this series so much! I’m always hoping for more to be added, but I especially loved this one!

I have a concussion and I’ve not been able to physically read a book in 1.5 years - this app has been my saving grace and has saved me from some very long painful nights.

Lucy rayner has a voice that is very easy to listen to and find it hard to adjust to other books when not listening to her voice.

HIGHLY recommend this app and this series
