À propos de cet audio

This is the story of the first 25 years of Mr. Churchill’s life, up to the point where his unique parliamentary career was just beginning. From childhood and his apprentice days at Harrow and Sandhurst we follow him on active service to Cuba, the North-West Frontier of India, Omdurman and the Boer War (including the historic story of his escape from captivity), while in the background are his early adventures in politics and literature.

“I have tried, in each part of the quarter-century in which this tale lies, to show the point of view appropriate to my years, whether as a child, a schoolboy, a cadet, a subaltern, a war-correspondent, or a youthful politician.... When I survey this work as a whole I find I have drawn a picture of a vanished age.”

Ce que les critiques en disent

“Narrator Frederick Davidson employs a slight Churchillian drawl, making this one of the most completely satisfying programs in years.” (Library Journal)

I've read this book half a dozen times, and never enjoyed it so much as Frederick Davidson's gently Churchillian read of this remarkable book.
When Sir Winston was born, everything was horse power, as commuting done in an autobus over rough dirt roads. When he died, the world was four years from visiting the moon, and was active in the Boer War and others, WWI, and of course, most involved with WWII. He knew and was chummy with three Princes of Wales who would later become Edward VII, Edward VIII (Duke of Windsor), and Charles III. He also knew personally five reigning monarchs, world leaders, and the famous folks of every age.

This book goes from his birth to the end of WWI. He tells us of bucolic pastures, great schools and parliaments, and the people throughout, and he does so with humour and honesty in his own heart.

If you have any interest in this man in any way or era, I advise and recommend this heartily. I'm sure you'll enjoy travelling with Sir Winston as I did.

150 Years Ago . . . Churchill is new again.
