I absolutely loved this audio. It had just the right touch of humor and interesting science to keep me drawn in . I really liked the pace at which it was read . It was a perfect entry into mycophilia that makes me want to dive deeper into the research and discoveries to come.

If you are at all interested in mushrooms, this is the book for you. Eugenia Bone has a wonderful way of describing the material, and the book is very well-rounded. This is also the type of book you can enjoy more than once!

With a title like Mycophilia, one could expect it to be a scientific text about fungi, specifically the revelations about mycelium, which the book dips its toes in before spending far too long belabouring the agricultural industry of fungal fruiting bodies in the USA, picking and cuisine of edible mushrooms, and various forays and workshops about mushroom picking. I understand now that Eugenia Bone is not a scientist, which is obvious in this book.

Slightly misleading

This book had some interesting info, but a few racist descriptions of people who pick wild mushrooms for the commercial trade really turned me off the whole book. At one point the author says she’s able to tell the “races” of a group of men working on their trucks by their head & body shape??! Pretty sure “race” as a form of physiological categorization was debunked many many decades ago. In any case, I decided to return the book. I am utterly disappointed as I was looking forward to this listen.

I wanted to like this but… racist descriptions turned me off
