Boys and men are struggling. Profound economic and social changes of recent decades have many losing ground in the classroom, the workplace, and in the family. While the lives of women have changed, the lives of many men have remained the same or even worsened.

Our attitudes, our institutions, and our laws have failed to keep up. Conservative and progressive politicians, mired in their own ideological warfare, fail to provide thoughtful solutions.

The father of three sons, a journalist, and a Brookings Institution scholar, Richard V. Reeves has spent twenty-five years worrying about boys both at home and work. His new book, Of Boys and Men, tackles the complex and urgent crisis of boyhood and manhood.

Reeves looks at the structural challenges that face boys and men and offers fresh and innovative solutions that turn the page on the corrosive narrative that plagues this issue. Of Boys and Men argues that helping the other half of society does not mean giving up on the ideal of gender equality.

There is a lot of great information but as a father of two boys I was looking for a more granular to do list that I could help them with right now. It is a good overview and is good place to start. I would recommend the book to others

I enjoyed this as my first audible book, and it was very informative for me as a faulty new father. Narration was nice and easy to listen to.

This was one of the most inspiring books I’ve listened to and I listen to a LOT! What a fresh unpolarized perspective on what boys and men need now and into the future. It’s a book for our times that doesn’t take sides, criticize, condemn or preach but that invites us to observe what’s happening today and make an investment of time, attention and financial resources in the future we can create that makes us all stronger, healthier, bolder and better!!

A beautiful testament to who we can be when we honour our differences knowing they make us better when we come together.

If you know a boy or a man, read this book. ✨❤️

Many statements of facts like belief that gender pay gap (debunked years ago) is real and that boys are at a disadvantage in school and proposes altruistic yet unrealistic solutions, leaning into socialism. Ivory tower, left leaning, liberal.

Not impressed

This work deals with current difficulties for men and boys to be socially and economically adept in the United States.

The author’s approach is decidedly academic, and he abundantly provides statistics as well as quotations from multiple other studies.

He brings forward what he considers might be solutions: to postpone the beginning of schooling for boys by one year since they don’t mature as fast as girls; to significantly increase the number of males among grade schoolteachers, psychologists, and social workers; to provide paid nontransferable paternity and maternity leaves of equal duration, etc.

Despite occasional mentions of foreign studies, it must be underscored that the thinking focuses strictly on the United States. Strangely, the potential impact of video games is only briefly mentioned and boys’ (and men’s) fascination with competitive sports is not even alluded to.

Overall, many may wonder why the author’s analysis was not simply presented in an article rather than in a full-length book.
