Great book

I hope audible would have divided the chapters with proper index . (Case study) . It doesn’t mention the headlines too while reading . I had to buy written book .

Outdated and bland

It is so outdated is still talks about CDs, Nokias and digital cameras.
No strategy for making a purple cow other than find your niche and be remarkable for them. Dare and fail quickly. Repeat.

Seth Godin always says something of value

...but this one, at this point, is a bit dated. Even as a "new edition."

Still, Godin is a master of the paradox and a source of inspiration, so if you just want to challenge or freshen up your business approaches, go for it. But maybe pick one of his more recent works.

Be a Purple Cow

In this book Seth kind of missed the mark when it came to predicting the future of technology. But in truth tech changes so fast that very few people could have predicted some of the changes that have occured since this book was wrote.

What Set nailed in his book was the premise that being ordinary and in the middle of the pack is the worst place to be. As he explained, exceptional people and ideas live at the outer edge of the bell curve.

Because I was applying for jobs I took Seth's advice, ripped up my cover letter, and started over. Instead a standard boring letter outlining the companies needs and my qualifications (as recommended by professional hired to help my job search) I wrote a story.

My cover letter was a purple cow story for sure and it worked! Being a highly skilled and experienced IT professional I only apply for high paying jobs. Being a purple cow is necessary if you want to stand out from the crowd.

Take Seth's advice... be exceptional, be unique, and be yourself! Be the Purple Cow.

Highly recommend consuming this book.

Challenges the MBA thinking.

Such a great book and concepts that are proven in the market and from observing successful businesses.

Best challenge I got from it was to test the obscurity of present an idea so it can be differentiated from the mainstream.

Outdated

When I saw the release date was 2020 for the new edited version I assumed it was up to 2020 but its not. Its still from 2009 and a LOT has changed since then. Very basic information. Would be better if it were updated to where we are technologically since that's what he spends a lot of time discussing and just about everything that's "new" is already been improved upon.

The caption summarizes the book

Entire book can be summed up by saying "be different"

He also goes against what he said at the start of the book near the end. I was zoning out listening to this thing its just full of so much fluff.

98% of the book is stories of diff brands, theres no process theres no specifics.

I forced myself to listen to it twice, and even on the second round there wasn't anything in there.

Its like going to a museum and getting forced to listen to an audio book about how the painter chose red to signify XYZ while in reality the guy could of just been out of blue.

Pretty sure he also hints at just giving up and not even trying to compete within niches if someone else has a purple cow..like does this man not understand how competition work? how humans evolve when they're forced to do so?

You can learn 100x more by researching any business you find interesting on your own vs spending that same amount of time reading this book.

Kinda sucks this is my first review ever and I heard so much about this book since Ive been in marketing since 2014, but now Im questioning the people's intelligence of who ever told me I should read this book.
