The ice is coming. It was the last thing we expected, but the world is freezing. A new ice age has dawned. Billions have fled the glaciers. A cataclysmic war is coming. In orbit, a group of scientists are running the Winter Experiments, a last-ditch attempt to understand why the planet is cooling. None of the climate models they build make sense. But then they discover an anomaly, an unexplained variation in solar radiation...and something else. Close to the burning edge of the sun, they catch a fleeting glimpse of something that shouldn’t be there....

When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Few know the warship’s actual name. But everyone has heard the rumors. The PUV James Keeling can do something no other vessel in existence can do—slip into another dimension, travel undetected, then re-emerge onto our plane and surprise enemy targets. But the thing that makes the Crypt unique also makes it a nightmare for those onboard; interdimensional travel causes hallucinations, violent behavior, and psychotic breakdowns. Keeling could be the Union’s greatest weapon, a game-changing asset that can defeat the bloodthirsty zealots of the Purist Nation, the Union’s mortal enemy.

Description
FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF LOST IN TIME
At CERN, a scientist has just made an incredible discovery—a breakthrough that may answer the deepest questions about human existence.
But what he's found is far more dangerous than he ever imagined.
Dr. Tyson Klein is a quantum physicist who has dedicated his entire life to his research. At CERN, he analyses data generated by the Large Hadron Collider, the world's biggest and most powerful particle accelerator. Now, Ty believes he's found a pattern in its output. It looks like an organised data stream, being broadcast over what he calls a quantum radio.
Could it be a signal from another universe? A message sent from the future? Or something else entirely?
As Ty peels back the layers of his discovery, he learns that what he's found isn't what he thought it was. The encoded message is far more profound. It may alter our understanding of human existence and the universe.
But Ty is not the only one looking for it. Someone has been following his research for a long time. And they'll do anything to prevent him from unravelling what is being broadcast by the quantum radio...
Because the first one to discover the truth may well control the future.

No Spoilers except to say I knew it
How timely is this novel. What is brilliant about this novel is the Agatha Christie like hints that seem insignificant but quickly become clues to the direction of the story. The writing and narration are excellent. I will be back for more.

Steven Hawking as a Historian. The best!
The story holds together to spin a nice tale. The premise is somewhat worn and promises more words in the fashion of more books if you’re interested. The wordsmithing is very good.
Ray Porter does a fine job as usual. Hope the historians feature Steve again… in another universe. 🙏🏼

interesting story, terrible writing execution
As usual Ray Porter is brilliant with unique character interpretation subtly added to his narration.
The story is one of intrigue and mystery that sell itself really well initially, but falls short in execution. Smart characters make irrational decisions and the plot moves forward sometimes in unsatisfying ways (don't want to spoil anything). I actually liked the ending a bit more than other reviewers here but hated the middle portion of the book, would not recommend.

Solid First Audiobook
Started getting into audiobooks to keep me busy at work and this was a solid choice for my first one
The story actually managed to keep me hooked despite my short ADHD attention span. The only thing that left me a bit disappointed was Penny didn't have a bigger role she was just there and not there until way later But again very solid story. will be listening to the future books.
