Histoire
On a NUMA training mission in the Caribbean, Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala catch a distress call from a nearby freighter. Leaping into action, they locate a damaged vessel and a dead captain clutching a shotgun. While searching the freighter for clues, Kurt and Joe are ambushed by crew members who seem terrified and disoriented, almost brainwashed. The trawler they were hauling has vanished, taken—the men say—by baffling lights that circled the ship.

Description
Sam and Remi Fargo, heroes of Spartan Gold, return in this extraordinary new adventure from the number-one New York Times- bestselling author. With Spartan Gold, a daring thriller that Publishers Weekly proclaimed "solidly in the Cussler tradition, [and] sure to please new fans and old," Clive Cussler introduced husband-and-wife treasure-hunting team Sam and Remi Fargo. In their electrifying new adventure, the Fargos make a startling discovery that others would kill to keep hidden....
While scuba diving in Tanzania, Sam and Remi Fargo come upon a relic belonging to a long-lost Confederate ship. An anomaly about the relic sets them off chasing a mystery-but unknown to them, a much more powerful force is engaged in the same chase. Mexico's ruling party, the ultranationalist Mexica Tenochca, is intent on finding that artifact as well, because it contains a secret that could destroy the party utterly.
Through Tanzania and Zanzibar, into the rainforests of Madagascar, and across the Indian Ocean to Indonesia and the legendary site of the 1883 Krakatoa explosion, the Fargos and their ruthless opponents pursue the hunt-but only one can win. And the penalty for failure is death.
Filled with the dazzling suspense and breathtaking action that are Cussler's trademarks, Lost Empire is a stunning new novel from the grand master of adventure.

Good and bad depending on what you're after
I'll start off by stating I really enjoyed the first book in this series so naturally, I was excited to dig into this second offering. Unfortunately, this title left me dissapointed. Many parts of the book were very slow, and somewhat dry. If you're into the history lessons the Fargo Adventures (and I mean really into them) then you should enjoy this book. If you're into the action and suspense that keeps you flipping pages, you might want to avoid this title. For me, there was far to much narration and not enough action.
I found myself at some points unable to pay attention and realizing that there had been 10-15 minutes where nothing had happened, other than explaining about Aztecian history. I really like narration of this kind usually but I found it was just a little too much. By the end of the book I was happy it was over, and it might be awhile before I try the third in the series.
Scott Brick's preformance was, as usual, stellar. His voices for the different characters and many accents were bang on, and his flow and pauses are great.
