Description

February in Newfoundland is the longest month of the year.

Another blizzard is threatening to tear a strip off downtown St. John’s, while inside The Hazel restaurant, a storm system of sex, betrayal, addiction and hurt is breaking overhead. Iris, a young hostess from around the bay, is forced to pull a double despite resolving to avoid the charming chef and his wealthy restaurateur wife. Just tables over, Damian, a hungover and self-loathing server, is trying to navigate a potential punch-up with a pair of lit customers who remain oblivious to the rising temperature in the dining room. Meanwhile, Olive, a young woman far from her Northern home, watches it all unfurl from the fast and frozen street. Through rolling blackouts, we glimpse the truth behind the shroud of scathing lies and unrelenting abuse and discover that resilience proves most enduring in the dead of this winter’s tale.

By turns biting, funny, poetic and heartbreaking, Megan Gail Coles’ debut novel rips into the inner lives of a wicked cast of characters, building towards a climax that will shred perceptions and force a reckoning. This is blistering Newfoundland Gothic for the 21st century, a wholly original, bracing and timely portrait of a place in the throes of enormous change, where two women confront the traumas of their past in an attempt to overcome the present and to pick up a future.

Captures the essence of NL social dynamics

This book perfectly emulates social stratification in modern-day St. John's, Newfoundland and how that plays out when those of different social groups collide. The townie/bayman dichotomy that has existed for decades remains at the forefront, and Megan Gail Coles develops each character's narrative as it relates to that dichotomy with precision. Having grown up in NL, and also lived most of my adult life here, I could envision each character well, as they parallel many individuals I have encountered.

This book was so evocative, stirring up a wide range of emotions for me, from openly laughing to weeping to sheer anger.

I adored this book from start to finish. If you are looking for something that will both entertain, yet stir your soul and give you new perspective, give this book a chance.

Poor

This was not a great book. Depressing. The narrator yells through most of it. Too flowery.

Aggressive, heart wrenching and raw

I loved the rhythmic and near poetic language, the reader's variations on Newfoundland accents and character voices was perfect. It took me a while to adjust volume and speed for narrative parts. The voice was a bit angry, understandably. It felt like performance art, spoken word, by the end.

The story was also difficult to hear sometimes too. The author does not shy away from anything. it was refreshingly, brutally honest.

the narrator is yelling the whole time.

The book is interesting, it's dark, it's thoughtful. I could not get passed the narrator though.

So much anger

There is absolutely nothing funny about this book. The story was okay. It was more depressing than I would have hoped for but overall interesting. However, the author should have paid someone else to read the book. She has one range. It’s loud and angry. I found listening to her was stressful. I will not purchase another book read by this author and in all honesty, there are many other Newfoundland authors that are better.

Needs a *trigger warning in the description

This was a good book to read to get a glimpse of a localized culture. As a Prairie girl it was interesting to compare/contrast the different experiences with similar characters in my community.
As other reviews have noted there is a very 'stream of thought' feel to the entire book. For the first bit it's really hard to gauge the switches between the different narratives. I feel like this was exacerbated in the audio version because there are no pauses between one character's stream of consciousness and the next. Just. One. Fluid. Run. On. Sentence. It does get a little better as you get to know the voices. The narrator/author is very good. Maybe if the production left space between it would be an easier listen.

*But the thing that I think is important to note is that this is a very triggering story. And there isn't even a vague indication in the book description of trauma. But please be warned that there is a very serious sexual assault, and numerous other allusions to sexual assault. And in the end there really is no justice, or even hope. Just shit. Hurt people hurting people, broken people breaking futher, and scum getting away with it all.

Glad I read it. Wish I had more energy to sit in the truth. But I live it so I usually read to escape. So on to something frivolously light to pull me out.

Definitely not a beach read

The narrator's voice and cadence were so enjoyable, it made this gutwrenching story bearable. Had this book not been so well written, I don't believe I could have made it through. Compelling and raw, meant to be read when your mindset is ready for the onslaught. Definitely not a beach read.
