Description

A gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller of family intrigue and dark secrets, from the author of Someone Is Watching and See Jane Run.

There was no shortage of words she could use to describe her father, and almost none of them complimentary. Serves you damn right, she thought. A voicemail from her estranged sister, Melanie, sends Robin’s heart racing and her mind spiraling in a full-blown panic attack. Melanie’s message is dire: Their father, his second wife, and his 12-year-old stepdaughter have been shot - likely in a home invasion - and lie in the hospital in critical condition.

It’s been more than five years since Robin turned her back on her father when he married her best friend. Five years since she said good-bye to her hometown of Red Bluff, California, and became a therapist. More than two years since Robin and Melanie have spoken. Yet even with all that distance and time and acrimony, the past is always with Robin.

Now, she must return to the family she left behind. As she attempts to mend fences while her father clings to life, Robin begins to wonder if there is more to the tragedy than a botched burglary attempt. It seems that everyone - Robin’s mercurial sister, her less-than-communicative nephew, her absent brother, and even Tara, her father’s wife - has something to hide. And someone may have put them all in grave danger.

New York Times best-selling author Joy Fielding has written a gripping edge-of-your-seat thriller of family intrigue and dark secrets. The Bad Daughter explores the deadly differences between the lies we want to believe and the truths we wish not to know.

Praise for The Bad Daughter:

“So expert is [Joy] Fielding at seeding clues that readers will never see the final plot twist coming. The acutely portrayed family dynamics lend pathos and a certain schadenfreudian frisson to the proceedings. An author who knows her way around suburban angst.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Fielding, a sure hand at psychological suspense, amps up tension nicely here as the narrative reaches a high-energy conclusion.” (Booklist)

“[Keeps] the reader turning the pages until the bombshell final shocker.” (Publishers Weekly)

Good drama. A bit predictable but kept me wanting to hear more and had a great ending.

Wonderful story, couldn't put it down!!

Who was the real Bad Daughter, anyway? I guarantee, you'll be surprised when the truth is revealed!

Wonderful Narration

The story was interesting, however the narration was excellent. I listen to many audio books but few have excellent narritors. If you're like me and it means a lot to you, you will enjoy this one.

The story line is okay; irritating characters

It's been a while since I picked up a Joy Fielding book. So, when I saw "The Bad Daughter" I downloaded the offering. The narrator does an excellent job however parts of the story are just irritating. Robin, the therapist, takes constant guff from her sister. Melanie, the sarcastic, smart-mouthed sibling cannot have a conversation unless peppered with put-downs and insults. The 12 yr. old girl, Cassidy, is equally disturbing. The dialogue doesn't fit for a kid that age. Then Ms. Fielding feels the need to interject within the storyline, a cult-oriented religious group. No specifics about this sect other than plain clothes and Christian faith which is eloquently admonished by the 12 yr. old granddaughter, receiving an Amen or two from the aunts. I finished the book, had a ridiculous ending and probably won't be seeking out any more Fielding books for a some time.

Absolutely terrible

*Spoilers*
DO NOT assume by the reviews that this is a good book like i did.
This book was terrible, the narration was wonderful but that was the only positive I comment i have.
First, the main character robin is a neurotic mess and no one knows why she's literally just fucked up. She has serious daddy issues and she is incredibly gullible, she isnt relatable whatsoever.
Then there is her sister Melanie who is a straight up bitch simply because their mom favored Robin. She treats everyone poorly, and she lets her some what high functuoning autistic son do whatever the hell he wants then gets pissed when people question her motives.
Second this book was a bad twist on Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. listen to sharp objects, you won't regret it its so much better.
immediately after Cassidy woke up and started talking i knew what happened. it was so predictable and sickingly childish. The way cassidy was written made me want to give up the book, it was terrible. Not to mention she's freaking 12! Her character is written as if she's 16, it's so annoying.
i could go on but those are the key points that i had to list. Overall i DO NOT recommend this book.

No Mystery

The story had so much promise, but A quarter of the way into The book it becomes very clear Who did what and the mystery is over. Some of the characters were well written and somewhere just horrible clichés. It’s not a bad book, but it’s not a good book.

Soap Opera Mystery

Definitely not a classic. If you appreciate a well written book this is likely not for you.

Keeps You Wondering

In the beginning I was kept guessing on just "who" the Bad Daughter is ... Family dynamics and general warfare among family members kept me wondering just what that hell is going on. Soon the sweetest of them all begins to rot & All ends with a twist you don't see coming....

I just love Joy Fielding

I think this book was very well narrated. The best part was when Robin figured out who the killer was! Loved the Sheriff too!

Enjoyable Beach Read

It's not hard to figure out the culprit. But it was a fun listen. It would have been nice to have both a male and female narrator.

Who IS The Bad Daughter?

This book had twists and turns throughout , so the reader never knows what might come next.
There are actually three daughters in the story, all clearly a little bit bad but the real thing that keeps you from wanting to listen past bedtime and in the bathroom is which one turns out to be truly bad.
Well written and equally well narrated, The Bad Daughter is one of the best audio books I’ve heard in a long time!
