In 1965, the US government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians. This was one of the most important turning points of the 20th century, eliminating the largest communist party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring copycat terror programs in faraway countries like Brazil and Chile. But these events remain widely overlooked, precisely because the CIA's secret interventions were so successful.

Guyanese intellectual Walter Rodney emerged as one of the leading thinkers and activists of the anticolonial revolution. In 1980, shortly after founding of the Working People's Alliance in Guyana, the 38-year-old Rodney would be assassinated. In his magnum opus, Rodney incisively argues that grasping "the great divergence" between the West and the rest can only be explained as the exploitation of the latter by the former. This meticulously researched analysis of the repercussions of European colonialism in Africa remains an indispensable study for grasping global inequality today.

Since its U.S. debut a quarter-century ago, this brilliant text has set a new standard for historical scholarship of Latin America. It is also an outstanding political economy, a social and cultural narrative of the highest quality, and perhaps the finest description of primitive capital accumulation since Marx. Rather than chronology, geography, or political successions, Eduardo Galeano has organized the various facets of Latin American history according to the patterns of five centuries of exploitation.

Histoire
Reform or Revolution, also titled Social Reform or Revolution?, is an 1899 pamphlet by Polish-German Marxist theorist Rosa Luxemburg, in which she argues that trade unions, reformist political parties, and the expansion of social democracy could not create a socialist society as Eduard Bernstein, among others, argued. She contends from a historical materialist perspective that capitalism is economically unsustainable and will eventually collapse and that a revolution is necessary to transform capitalism into socialism.

In 2013 Assata Shakur, founding member of the Black Liberation Army, former Black Panther and godmother of Tupac Shakur, became the first ever woman to make the FBI's most wanted list. Assata Shakur's trial and conviction for the murder of a white State Trooper in the spring of 1973 divided America. Her case quickly became emblematic of race relations and police brutality in the USA. While Assata's detractors continue to label her a ruthless killer, her defenders cite her as the victim of a systematic, racist campaign.

Neoliberalism - the doctrine that market exchange is an ethic in itself, capable of acting as a guide for all human action - has become dominant in both thought and practice throughout much of the world since 1970 or so. Writing for a wide audience, David Harvey, author of The New Imperialism and The Condition of Postmodernity, here tells the political-economic story of where neoliberalization came from and how it proliferated on the world stage.

Among the defining figures of the Age of Revolution, Toussaint Louverture is the most enigmatic. Though the Haitian revolutionary’s image has multiplied across the globe—appearing on banknotes and in bronze, on T-shirts and in film—the only definitive portrait executed in his lifetime has been lost. Well versed in the work of everyone from Machiavelli to Rousseau, he was nonetheless dismissed by Thomas Jefferson as a “cannibal.” A Caribbean acolyte of the European Enlightenment, Toussaint nurtured a class of black Catholic clergymen who became one of the pillars of his rule.

Description
A classic and impassioned account of the first revolution in the Third World.
This powerful, intensely dramatic book is the definitive account of the Haitian Revolution of 1794-1803, a revolution that began in the wake of the Bastille but became the model for the Third World liberation movements from Africa to Cuba. It is the story of the French colony of San Domingo, a place where the brutality of master toward slave was commonplace and ingeniously refined. And it is the story of a barely literate slave named Toussaint L'Ouverture, who led the black people of San Domingo in a successful struggle against successive invasions by overwhelming French, Spanish, and English forces and, in the process, helped form the first independent nation in the Caribbean.

Enlightening read
This is a highly recommended book for anyone who is a history buff. I remember back in high school learning about how Haiti came to be but it was relegated to a paragraph at most with one main detail and that was the slave revolt. There was no other context besides that. This book went into detail about the situation before the revolt, during and after while describing the people involved and what led to the atrocities from both sides. This is a book that I could listen to over and over.

So you want a revolution?
The story of Haiti and the fight for liberty is a daunting tale of what is to be expected when rebelling against the tyrants of colonialism and imperialism. One that would do those who call themselves black in the US well to fully comprehend. With such comprehension they may be able to stop falling for the empty words of colonial leadership and identify them properly as such. To identify their current status in the U.S. as one of property that return profits that colonist would fight to death before liberating. To identify that as time has passed this master and slave relationship has only perfected itself to be subtle and even enjoyable without the context of history. Prime e
This book ultimately shows how the negro spirit has been successfully domesticated and docile. The heart of the Haitian rebels is long gone from the happily assimilated blacks we see today.

Vital History Little Taught
Toussaint L'Ouverture was a great military leader, the Bonaparte of the West Indies. I bought a hard copy of the book so as to be able to compare the narrative to maps and to be able to check names of the figures where the well-pronounced French names don't stick clearly in the memory of a native Anglophone.

Black Jacobins
This book was excellent. I didn't realize that it dealt so specifically with the Haitian Revolution, but I learned so much as a consequence. This book really brings to life Toussaint L'Overture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines. At the end, I felt as if I was in the prison cell with Toussaint. It was such a horrible ending to a man who wanted Black liberation while still holding on to the dream that he could negotiate with France.

Masterpiece of history beautifully performed.
The story of the Haitian revolution and the extraordinary Toussaint L'Overture is thrilling history.
James published this work in 1933 with an updating in 1963 which continues to be the published work, and which is read in this audio book beautifully by Butler.
James' writing is excellent, has a distinct immediacy, rich with nuance and significant detail that always propels the narrative forward and gives depth to L'Overture as a person, the relationships of all involved, and a great mastery in describing the sweep of individuals, communities, cultures, nations, global history, and destiny.
Cannot speak more highly about this work of historical scholarship. It is an exemplar.
Butler enriches the work with the clarity of his voice, its sonorous sound, expert diction, excellent performance. Truly a top audio book performer.

A good recount of Haiti’s slave revolt.
I appreciated the insights into the character of Toussaint Louverture and the detail of the battles fought. After finishing this book, I sat in solemn reflection of the destruction, bloodshed, barbarity and cruelty that birthed Haiti’s independence. Yet, the courageous determination to be free at all costs inspires. The Marxist terminology used seemed contrived. Great book, though.
