I always love a good Gamache mystery
Louise Penny did not disappoint. It took a moment for me to get used to the new narrator but they did a great job!

Ohh that cliffhanger...
As usual Louise Penny keeps us on the edge of our seat. At first she sets the pace with languid descriptions then hooks us with rapid-fire scene changes just at the peak of the action. Although I love Three Pines, I enjoy when the Gamaches widen their horizons.

Entertaining
A little convoluted but so well done that it just pulls you in. Sad that the other 3 Pines characters were peripheral but necessary given story line. I’ve read every LP book and this one does not disappoint. The francophone reader was much appreciated and I look forward to the follow up story.

Gamache’s New Era
I was prepared to miss Robert Bathurst’s narration, but I was immediately won over by Jean Brassard. The series is set in Quebec and it is so nice to hear correct pronunciations of names and places. Also, Brassard makes Gamache more human; he doesn’t have any of the knowing smugness that sometimes came across in Bathurst’s narration. The story is dark, but that isn’t new for the series. It was worth the wait, and I look forward to number twenty.

Disappointed in narration
Jean Brassard does not make the characters come alive. His voice is blasé. He does not invoke the images of the rich characters in the story that I have come to know and love. So disheartening. If he continues to be the narrator I will not purchase any more audible books in this series.

Not the best Gamache best by far
I’ve liked every book in the series, so it’s a new experience to be disappointed at the end of a Gamache book. The plot is gauche and unnecessarily intricate… it is cousu de fil blanc. I didn’t used to be a fan of the previous narrator, but now I sourly miss him… Still glad I read it, but I missed the humanity and yummy Three Pines feeling of the previous books.

the Cadence of the new performer makes this book almost unreadable.
This is another winner of a book it is lovely it starts out gently and builds in intensity to a feverish pitch. The downside is the new performer. I understand completely that the author wanted to have a Quebecois do the reading out of respect and authenticity. The accent is difficult to understand. However, the big problem is his cadence. There are bizarre pauses after specific words in the middle of sentences that make it very difficult to follow what is going on. I have just finished chapter 28 and realized that I am very confused. I am restarting the book and really hating the thought of having to listen to this man reading it. It is so bad, that I may have to buy a hard copy! I haven't had to do that over the many years that I have been with Audible. I have several hundred books in my library and I have enjoyed every single one. I am so disappointed with this performer.

New Narration
I found the narration of this story a distraction. There was very little differentiation between character voices. i was so looking forward to the perfection vocalized by Robert Bathurst,

Narration isn’t great
Each character sounds much the same as the narrator’s own, so it’s not as easy to follow as the others without a bit of effort. I love all the Louise Penny books but the narration for this particular book lacks enough differentiation. Too bad.
