She informs the islanders that it’s time to resume her original mission - to find other survivors, screen them, and return them to the island. Histoire
After a long day of prepping a house for painting, all Gus Berry wanted was the night off to spend some time with his girlfriend and relax before having to return to work the next morning. But that isn’t going to happen. Because Gus’s co-worker Benny has found a one-night job at the local Mollymart East, a job that has to be done by morning. If Gus and his paint crew can complete the work by then, it could mean huge business with a respected, established grocery store chain.

After securing the vast government bunker of Whitecap and learning of her affliction, Collie decides to head west to challenge the sinister road clan known as the Leather and kill its leader, the Dog Tongue. Along for the ride is Gus Berry, who knows full well the very thing that is killing Collie is also keeping her alive. His growing affection for the operator is only matched by his dislike of the one called Milo, the very man who shot her, who Collie insists on bringing along on their mission.

Histoire
It’s been a rough time for Gus Berry. He barely survived the city of Annapolis as its population underwent a violent transformation, leaving everyone he knew or loved either dead or undead. Things aren’t much better now, though. In fact, things might have become much worse. Living off the land, foraging for food, water, even medicine, and being able to adapt to a changing environment…it all takes a special individual, with an exceptional skill set and determination to survive. Gus Berry is not that individual.

Bram Stoker kept secret a tale even more terrifying than Dracula. It begins among the Carpathian peaks, when an intrepid explorer discovers a mysterious golden box. She brings it back with her to the foggy streets of Victorian London, unaware of its dangerous power…or that an evil beyond imagining has already taken root in the city. Stoker, a successful theater manager but frustrated writer, is drawn into a deadly web spun by the wealthy founders of a mission house for the poor. Far from a safe haven, the mission harbors a dark and terrifying secret.

A century from now, thanks to a technology allowing instantaneous travel across light-years, humanity has solved its energy shortages, cleaned up the environment, and created far-flung colony worlds. The keys to this empire belong to the powerful North family - composed of successive generations of clones. Yet these clones are not identical. For one thing, genetic errors have crept in with each generation. For another, the original three clone "brothers" have gone their separate ways, and the branches of the family are now friendly rivals more than allies. Or maybe not so friendly....

Description
Mountain Man, book 1: Boomstick. Samurai bat. Motorcycle leather. And the will to live among the unliving. Augustus Berry lives a day-to-day existence comprised of waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the inevitable day when "they" will come up the side of his mountain and penetrate his fortress. Living on the outskirts of a city and scavenging for whatever supplies remain after civilization died two years ago, Gus knows that every time he goes down into undead suburbia could be his last.
Not only does he face a corpse-infested urban hell, human scavengers, and unending loneliness, but now a new mystery has risen.... The undead are disappearing from the streets. A force is gathering beyond the mountain man's wildest nightmares, even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it's preparing to hunt. Contains graphic language and scenes of violence.
Safari, book 2: A new mystery has risen for Gus - the undead are disappearing from the streets. A force is gathering beyond the mountain man's darkest nightmares, even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it's preparing to hunt.
Hellifax, book 3: A serial killer stalks the ice-glazed streets. Half-frozen deadheads choke the avenues. Infected vermin rise from the labyrinth of sewer systems, hungry for warm flesh. And a handful of survivors struggle to escape and find someplace safe. In his hunt for Tenner, Scott discovers he must contend with all of this before things truly get worse. Welcome to Hellifax.

An entertaining story and fantastic performance
I am a big fan of this author and this narrator. They are a perfect pairing. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories of the mountain man, a unique survival story in a saturated genre. I highly recommend this collection. Every once and a while when absorbed in the story I would be right there with Gus and the Captain sipping on some Scotch. #Audible1

Different
I really liked this book and as my first foray into the zombie genre, I was impressed. 3 books for the price of one was also a very good deal.
R.C. Bray aces the narration as usual. I chose books that I normally wouldn't be interested in, based on the fact that he's the narrator, hence first zombie book.
I found Gus intriguing and as slow as the book seemed at times, it kept drawing me in and I could hardly wait to listen to it.
I recommend taking a chance on this book. Action, character growth and a few unexpected twists and turns kept me listening.
I could almost smell the zombies

Enjoyable, if typical, Zombie fun
Face it, 'Hellifax' will never make the list for Canada Reads. You won't be studying 'Safari' in your Adv Lit classes. This is, on it's face, a pretty standard zombie apocalypse story - go to town for supplies, kill some zombies, fight some bad survivors, befriend some good ones - but "Mountain Man" has some features that make it far better than many books in the genre.
First is Blackmore's writing. The man writes amazingly vivid scenes. His descriptions of battles, in particular, are fantastic, easily visualized with great pacing, tension, and even humor. He clearly enjoys the subject matter and recognizes how actually absurd this premise is. It's not parody, but he joyfully doesn't take his story too seriously. I mean, come on. It's a Zombie story, not classic literature. Blackwood understands that.
Unfortunately, his style does have some flaws, particularly his apparent fascination with genital scratching and pooping.
Also, the number of oh-so-nearly fatal experiences seems a little excessive. I found myself hoping at times that Blackmore would show the courage to pull a G.R.R.Martin and kill off one of his guys. Not so much in these tales.
And why are there so many psychopaths in Blackmore's world? Are crazy people more likely to survive? Or does surviving drive you insane? Thought provoking.
The combination of an almost tongue-in-cheek approach, mind's-eye description, and some philosophical questions is intriguing, entertaining and refreshing.
The second pretty unique aspect of the stories: the setting is SUBURBAN NOVA SCOTIA! Zombie Apocalypse in small town Canada, hordes in the dead of a Canadian winter. Awesome.
Third, Blackmore's characters are fairly unique...not quite antiheroes but very flawed protagonists. Neither terribly clever nor brave, Gus is out of shape and alcoholic. Scott is more of a typical 'hero', but remains a tortured man and a bit of a wuss. While decent fellows, neither are really all that nice. They're relatable, something attempted but not often successful in zombie stories.
Lastly, R.C. Bray is a masterful narrator. This is the first time I've listened to a performance and considered buying a book just because this guy is reading it (though I love Michael Kramer and Roy Dotrice).
One very small issue. Why can't any Non-Canadian say the word "toque"?
All in all, an exceptional collection of novels. 8.5 Stars out of 10.

Zombies done right !!
The narration is wonderful and the characters are well thought out.
There wasn't any part of the books where I was bored or lost interest and I powered through the series wanting to know what happened.
I would highly recommend this set of 3 novels if you like zombie stories because they are well written and enjoyable to listen to.

I’ll gladly share these books with some friends, cause I enjoyed this story from start to finish, and I loved how the story explained situations well, making you really picture beautiful, and disgusting things at the same time, and even funny, in a dark way sometimes.

Good story, great narrative, details need work
If you like zombie fiction, you cannot go wrong with Keith Blackmore. He is one of the best, however, at the risk of being one of those jerks who have to nit-pick about the details, he falls short with these novels. I have read this series a couple of times and just finished listening and cannot get past the errors he has made with Nova Scotia’s infrastructure. Sure, you can imagine a lot has changed, but it’s the little things like highway routes, distances and the city layout. Some of it simply doesn’t make sense and smacks of laziness due to just not checking or rechecking facts. It’s a shame. Oh, and Tramacet has *325mg* acetaminophen, NOT 335mg.

More morbid fun in the Annapolis Valley!
Makes you want to live here, eh? Zombies and zombie rats notwithstanding.
I've really liked this series, with the exception of Book 2 Safari, which I fairly hated, hence a lower rating than usual.
I'm from NS, Mom from the Valley and Dad not far from Tancook Island, so this was a fun romp through our rather strangely inhabited yards for Maritimers. The author has his geography a bit mixed up, and the funniest thing is ole South Mountain is pretty much a hill, but I digress. All in all, unless you are from here, you wouldn't know the difference anyway.
I take issue with a couple things, while trying not to spoil it. God love him he tries but RC Bray makes Newfoundlands sound a bit like demented leprechauns! He gave it a go and then wisely stopped, to understand how a Newfie talks, say Jaysus, say Bye, and we're good me son.
The other thing I take issue with is the use of "Sound suppressors" which we simply do not have in Canada, we aren't Amer-icans, we don't love our guns here in the North. Most don't own a gun, most wouldn't. I understand the writer is trying to appeal to a certain genre, and that genre tends to love guns and battles, but it's hardly indicative of 98% of Canadians. I have a rifle because I have livestock and predators, but we're probably the only gun in our rural neighbourhood.
But into the meat and potatoes of the books, I disliked Book 2 because it made no sense for Gus to lose his mind and start having long and often tedious conversations with the foppish Captain Morgain, and it makes no sense that he would burn down his place after burning the mythological city of Annapolis. I did not "get" the premise there at all. And then book 3 had nothing of Gus at all. While it was a good story, I hated they had to give Scott a love interest when he and Gus were great together. It does get a bit tedious with all the hiding and running and fighting...I just didn't think it was necessary to the story. Oddly enough, women also read this genre or at least I think so. It isn't all about guns.
Funny, I'm listening to an RE McDermott trilogy, and he just made reference in conversation to "Burning down the house, to kill all the rats", as I finish this review. That one's coming. Have many of the same criticisms.
And while I don't know much about zombie rats, I do understand real not dead rats. Real rats live underground, feed in a different area than they live and generally nest in yet another area, generally within 100 feet of their food source. They tend to make bolt holes every 2-4 feet in my chicken barns, they don't like to be above ground except when feeding. Now wit zombie rats, I guess all bets are off...
I have the last book of the series ready to cue up and I'll wrap up this series. It was fun. RC Bray was mostly awesome--the writing is often quite witty and not so juvenile as most drivel we get from this genre...I enjoyed it. It wasn't the worst in the genre. Probably wasn't the best, either.

It had everything from small romance to dramaticly graphic horror signs that will make your skin crawl!

author doesn't know anything about Canadian laws
so for one sound suppressors are completely illegal in Canada also both the gun and the ammo have to be locked up separately and are definitely not allowed on display

The Earth Abides
My opinion may get lost in the hordes other reviews already swarming around this three-in-one book. Still, I'll pitch a tiny squeak into the clamoring accolades because, other than serving my ego, it might be worth it to anyone who is familiar with the classic novel Earth Abides, which is a 1949 post-apocalyptic science fiction novel by George R. Steward.
There is strong parallelism between Blackmore's Mountain Man Omnibus: Books 1-3 and Steward's Earth Abides. While Earth Abides has nothing to do with zombies, the main character is a force of nature or force of something other than a person. In the Mountain Man Omnibus series, an apocalyptic event is also the character. Steward is asserted to be the father of this approach/sub-genre. Certainly, Steward he created and opened a portal that a select few like Blackmore have skillfully, impressively stepped through. More pointedly though, is Blackmore's adept characterization of a very specific sub-event that takes place, with recognizable similarity, in Steward's Earth Abides' world. My intent is not to give anything away so I'll swerve miles clear of that and stop right there.
Also, I do not mean my comment as a criticism of Blackmore as he gave renewed life and fresh identity to work that, while precious and classic, is very likely now under-read and under-appreciated. Blackmore proffers plenty of never-before exposed (perhaps that phrase is too strong but you know what I mean) terrain to keep the Omnibus journey feeling garden fresh, and he certain brings a unique voice to the genre. I compliment him on being well-read and for evidently holding George R. Steward's work in high regard. The best form of flattery is imitation...
As for me, I hold them both in high regard. Blackmore is certainly smart by avoiding reinvention of Steward's wheel, and instead making it shimmer anew in brilliant light.
The narration was superb. R. C. Bray kept it personal and read as if the story were his own.

45 minutes and .... really?
I love a great post-apocalyptic story with interesting characters. But when the main character ‘scratches his balls’ four times in 45 minutes, I can’t take the story seriously.

Great read, keeps you engaged
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. It's a great read if you're into zombie books. I found reasons to have alone time or take long drives because I wanted to hear how it turned out.
What did you like best about this story?
I was interested in the characters and their development; made me root for certain characters and despise others (oh, and the action wasn't bad either!). It was like watching a great mini series where you really can't wait for the next episode to see what happens next.
What about R. C. Bray’s performance did you like?
As usual, amazing. I've started choosing books solely because he's the narrator.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It's a zombie book...so no. :-)
Any additional comments?
Good read if you want to take a mental break and hear a great action story.

Great take on a zombie tale
I just have to say that R.C. Bray is the best narrator out there. He makes the stories pop as if you’re listening to 20 different people. Great job.

Meh.
This is a very manly man sort of zompoc lit, which is fine if scratching balls and drinking and crushing of heads and serial killer torture is your sort of bag.
There's some really problematic stuff with a female character at one point. The way the narrator talks about her (and treats her) was really off-putting. I stopped listening at that point. Before that, it was sort of just okay, not great but not so bad that I stopped listening, but at that point, I gave up.
I think that this is simply geared at a different sort of audience, with all of these glowing reviews. But it was definitely not my style.

Got Ominbus?
One Credit, Three Great Books
First, let me say these are great Zombie books at regular price, the fact that two of them are basically free is a great deal. You can spend three credits or three times the money, for the price of this one omnibus. Even if you did not like the first book, you would only be out one credit. The even greater thing about this series, is that you can get, The Hospital, for free. Get that and if you don't love it, don't buy the omnibus. If you like The Hospital, you will like these three books.
Gus is the star of the first two books. He is a regular guy, no solider, no special training, everything he knows he learned watching movies from the Seventies and Eighties. He scratches his junk, worries about his bowel movements and does a lot of drinking. A lot of drinking. EVERY MORNING I SQUEEZE PIPE. I enjoyed the second book, Safari the most. Gus is pretty much the only character. We kind of watch him go mad. He has lived alone for a long time and his best friend his a bottle of Captain Morgan. It is kind of like Tom Hanks in Castaway and his soccer ball. There is a lot of language and a lot of gore.
The third book is great, but not as good as the first two. Scott is the main character and he is just not as interesting as Gus. There are some slow parts or some shoot-em up parts that bored me, but not many. This book is grosser then the first two and has some well written scenes. When Scott takes a walk with the Zombies and starts to panic, I almost had a panic attack with him. Very well written. The third book especially, you want to listen in as large as chunks as possible. The longer you listen the more you become part of the characters. Anytime you quit and come back, it takes a little while to get that involved again. I actually missed an exit once, I was so into the story.
Bray is perfect, perfect, perfect.

unexpected!!
If you could sum up The Mountain Man Omnibus in three words, what would they be?
Did not think I would enjoy these books as zombies are not my thing... However, these books are wonderful!
I downloaded the free copy of the hospital and was hooked from there!

Entertaining listen, one big complaint
The author is a good storyteller and overall I enjoyed listening to the book. This wasn't a terribly original story, but it was entertaining. The main thing that really irritated me are the several homophobic comments scattered throughout the book. They're unnecessary to the story and came across kind of like someone making a statement and then saying "no homo." The author wanted to be sure we knew that the characters definitely weren't gay. I also got slightly misogynistic overtones from the book. Yes, there is one strong female character, but she felt like the exception that proves the rule. The men in the book are fully developed, with both strengths and flaws. Every female character seems to be either good or bad. The best woman in the book (trying not to give spoilers) almost feels like she's not a character in her own right, but an idealized woman who is included because obviously a man's story can't be complete without a woman. Having read only the first three books, it's possible that some of this is corrected in later books.

I actually liked the main character
What did you love best about The Mountain Man Omnibus?
I liked this book series. The main character reminded me of an actual person vs some super zombie killer.

greatest zombie narrative i've heard.
The author speaks with with such fluidity and passion. The narrator is so great I want to fall asleep, but cannot because he is so engaging.
