Description

OK y'all, it's spooky season and my November Reese's Book Club X Hello Sunshine book pick - The Other Woman by Sandie Jones - has one of the most twisted and entertaining plots. When Emily meets Adam, she thinks she's found the one - but it's not long before another woman tries to ruin their relationship. And folks...that woman is HIS MOTHER. I can't wait for y'all to finish it because I NEED to discuss that ending with you! X Reese

The Reese Witherspoon X Hello Sunshine Book Club pick for November and USA TODAY best seller

The Other Woman by Sandie Jones is the most twisty, addictive, and unpausable debut audio thriller you'll hear this year.

He loves you: Adam adores Emily. Emily thinks Adam’s perfect, the man she thought she’d never meet.

But she loves you not: Lurking in the shadows is a rival, a woman who shares a deep bond with the man she loves.

And she'll stop at nothing: Emily chose Adam, but she didn’t choose his mother Pammie. There’s nothing a mother wouldn’t do for her son, and now Emily is about to find out just how far Pammie will go to get what she wants: Emily gone forever.

The Other Woman will have you questioning her in every chapter.

This program includes a bonus conversation with the author.

Great twist but the middle is unbearable

For the first time in all the years I've listened to audiobooks, I found myself skipping ahead. The bulk of the story was excruciating because it is just so unrealistic. No person in real life will allow so many things to be done to them without saying a word.

Good story - some screechy characters<br />

I found it was jolting at times because of some of the characters unnecessarily loud and screechy.

not for a strong independent women

there were so many times I wanted to tell at the main character to grow up and stand up for herself.. It was a struggle to read and if I was 'reading' it rarher than listening, i would have skipped pages.

Spare me the constant blushes!

Well, no one can say I was not warned. There were "hints and allegations", reviews and comments from other readers and listeners. And when I trust my instinct as I consider the purchase an Audible download, if I pause? Baaaad choice. And The Other Woman
and
especially
the
slow
pacing
of
reader
Clare Corbett
was a baaaaad choice.

But, I whinged, it's steamy, sweat down the back of my neck hot in Missouri. It's 103 in my car before A/C kicks in. I'm bored! Bored, bored and more bored! I wanted entertainment, I wanted suspense, I wanted "Gone Girl" Version 2, I wanted
"Passenger" Version 2! And Emily? Those other two novels' protagonists would have given her a slap across the face, kicked her to the floor and stepped over the body.

I am kicking Emily out of my Audible, stepping over her excessively blushing body and walking away.

I have returned 4 books over the past year. I asked my librarian "Why is so much ______ (expletive) published recently"? She leaned forward and whispered "Because nowadays, publishers will publish just about anything". True words! And The Other Woman is a prime example.

Meh somewhat ok thriller, but the kind where everything unravels at the VERY end

This was ok. I wouldn’t outright recommend it but I wouldn’t prevent someone from getting it if they were really considering it. I like mystery thrillers that unravel throughout the book with hints both subtle and obvious and sufficient time the end for revelations and for the audience to make connections from the other events that occurred throughout the book (“show not tell”). I was entertained enough by this book and there were definitely parts where I really thought I had the twist predicted and I was wrong (not totally but more so than correct) — but not in a super impressive way. Not seeing a twist coming isn’t always stronger than an “obvious” twist that is solidly supported with a web of backstory, clues, and good character development. One strong aspect of the book is the author’s ability to create a mood of anticipation — even whether or not it amounts to anything, I still thought the way these moods were written was decent. I like this narrator from many other books but in this story, her voice was a little too mature for the main character, like Mary Poppins playing a 20-something-year-old — proper, sure...but not quite right. It was, however, the just the right voice for the boyfriend’s mother.

I hater to give negative reviews - BUT...

This was truly one of the first books I have ever read where I hate every single main character within it. It was a predictable, unrealistic bore to get through. I feel so harsh saying it, but oh, it was bad!

A predictable pass

The main character is so desperate for a happy ending she blatantly ignores signs that tell her to run. This book just didn’t do it for me. I had to force myself to finish.

Meh. Disappointing. Hard to listen to.

I felt this was a sub par psychological thriller. Much of it was listening to bickering conversations I wanted to end. I felt like the main character was stupid (sorry couldn’t find a more fitting word) for letting this happen to her. The story was a little ADHD the first half. One story is being told and then it went to a flashback and then a story outside of that flashback. Wished it would just stick the story. Ending was a little predictable.

Lastly the narration is overacted. A little too much and too loud at times. The narrator’s male voices are awful. Always sounding like big oafs with colds.

Left dumb struck!

Holy mother of... woah, sometimes a book comes around and smacks you upside the head. Dumb struck! Like how did I not see that? Sandier Jones wrote a fantastic mystery. That is what this is... there isn’t much of a thriller feel until those last 15 minutes. But during that brief time your heart will be going wild. I do kind of wish there was more of a thriller aspect to the story but it’s a great think story.

The narrator Clare Corbett was great. She read a fantastic story and, again, the accent is just perfect! I’d definitely listen to more books read by Ms. Corbett.

pushed the limits of credulity

Women who twist themselves into knots to be with someone they "love"...bah! This dysfunctional relationship should have been axed twenty chapters earlier. i want to read about strong women and true partnerships in love. This missed the mark.

Disappointing

Was really looking forward to another Reese recommendation but was sorely disappointed with the main character's lack of backbone and fear of upsetting a situation ( must be a Brit thing, any American woman worth her salt in this day and age? Wouldn't happen) and the ridiculous last chapter ending. Pity.

Not a good book and I'm confused who likes it...

This book calls itself a psychological thriller, but it neither delves fully into real psychology or reaps any thrills. It is one of the most frustrating and shallow books I have ever read in my life and I'm incredibly confused as to why so many people enjoyed it.

The protagonist is unendingly exasperating and is not a fully fleshed out character. People do not act this way in real life. Let me repeat, people do not act like this in this situation and this book's portrayal of an abuse victim is shallow and blaming. I work with women who get stuck in abusive relationships, and this is just not how it goes. The characters and plot aren't just unbelievable, they're detrimental to real abuse victims.

There are so many false equivalencies in this novel. The mother-in-law's motive does not track and her reasoning is not sound/ believable. Just when you think the main character will come to her bloody senses, she gets "persuaded" by behavior that isn't reasonable and ends up staying for whatever damn reason. It seriously makes no sense!

I hung on through the whole damn book because I generally trust Reese Witherspoon's recommendations, but this is a BAD book. It's poorly written. The characters are unrealistic and shallowly written. The plot is nonsense. The only thing this book succeeds in is making me bang my head against a wall. People talked about "such a good plot twist," but there just isn't a plot twist. If you didn't see the big "surprise" coming, you need to do some reading about what a healthy, well-functioning relationship looks like. There was no big twist in this book!!

I will say, I liked the narrator for the most part. My mock-British accent is coming along nicely and I've incorporated the word "chuffed" into my vocabulary.
