A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. Meanwhile, the bride has accounted for every detail and every possible disaster the weekend might yield except for, well, Phoebe and Phoebe's plan—which makes it that much more surprising when the two women can’t stop confiding in each other.
In turns absurdly funny and devastatingly tender, Alison Espach’s The Wedding People is ultimately an incredibly nuanced and resonant look at the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined—and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us.

There's no such thing as a perfect guy, but Xavier Rush comes disastrously close. A gorgeous veterinarian giving Greek god vibes—all while cuddling a tiny kitten? Immediate yes. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: To write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice
The #1 Indie Next Pick for August 2024
One of The Washington Post’s 10 Noteworthy Books for July and August
Named a Best Book of Summer 2024 by People Magazine, Bustle, Star Tribune, Goodreads, and LitHub
“The Wedding People is the perfect book to wrap up your summer reading. . . . heartwarming [and] hilarious.”—Jenna Bush Hager, The Today Show's #ReadwithJenna
“The Wedding People is so much more than a funny story (though it is very funny). Espach has penned a keenly observed novel about depression, love, the ways women make themselves small, and how one woman got over it. Fully realized and completely memorable.”—Booklist (starred review)
“Espach’s wit and warmth deliver a gratifying story about how people who have given up might find a reason to start caring again.”—Becky Meloan, The Washington Post

A story with depth, warmth and humour
Un problème est survenu. Veuillez réessayer dans quelques minutes.
I’ve been reading a lot of fluffy books lately to fill the time, and this one was a nice change. Easy listening but with more depth. Highly recommend.
Not predictable
Un problème est survenu. Veuillez réessayer dans quelques minutes.
The story begins with Phoebe, who arrives at a grand hotel where a wedding is set to take place. She is mistaken for one of the wedding guests, since every other person there is for the wedding. As she befriends the bride, the plot dives into the lives of a group of individuals connected by this event.
Phoebe is someone who is grappling with her unfulfilled desires and complicated relationships, and really not in a position to be celebrating love. As she navigates the chaos of wedding planning, she must also confront her own complicated emotions, relationships, and personal desires. The novel explores themes of love, loss, and jealousy, in a dark yet comedic way. I really loved how entertaining the story was. I didn’t want to put it down - but needed to because there was a lot to sit and reflect on. This is another really good example of how a work of fiction can provide you with more introspection than a nonfiction book can.
Read if you like:
• Character-driven stories
• moments of introspection
• complex relationships
• navigating adulthood
• dark & humorous reads
