A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.

It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. Meanwhile, the bride has accounted for every detail and every possible disaster the weekend might yield except for, well, Phoebe and Phoebe's plan—which makes it that much more surprising when the two women can’t stop confiding in each other.

In turns absurdly funny and devastatingly tender, Alison Espach’s The Wedding People is ultimately an incredibly nuanced and resonant look at the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined—and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us.

A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice

The #1 Indie Next Pick for August 2024

One of The Washington Post’s 10 Noteworthy Books for July and August

Named a Best Book of Summer 2024 by People Magazine, Bustle, Star Tribune, Goodreads, and LitHub

The Wedding People is the perfect book to wrap up your summer reading. . . . heartwarming [and] hilarious.”—Jenna Bush Hager, The Today Show's #ReadwithJenna

The Wedding People is so much more than a funny story (though it is very funny). Espach has penned a keenly observed novel about depression, love, the ways women make themselves small, and how one woman got over it. Fully realized and completely memorable.”Booklist (starred review)

“Espach’s wit and warmth deliver a gratifying story about how people who have given up might find a reason to start caring again.”—Becky Meloan, The Washington Post

Editorial Review

I’ll toast to that!
Feeling salty about beachfront displays of affection? As am I, along with Phoebe Stone, the spiraling protagonist of Alison Espach’s latest novel, who, newly single and depressed, has hot summer plans to self-sabotage in style at an elegant Newport resort. However, upon her arrival, she unexpectedly befriends a cohort of, you guessed it, wedding people, who would rather count Phoebe as an extra head for the caterers than have her potentially ruin the ceremony by being left unattended while erratically heartbroken. It doesn’t take long for Phoebe and the bride to bond over their underlying anxieties, and narrator Helen Laser’s spot-on delivery of all the witty insights embedded in this novel certainly makes it easy to fall for the vibrant cast of characters. So, if you too are in need of a summer pick-me-up, take a page out of Phoebe’s book and vicariously masquerade as a posh, pearl-clad sophisticate while opening up to this cynical yet ultimately heartfelt listen. — Haley H., Audible Editor

This book surprised me with how much I loved it. It was read so well I could not stop listening. This story felt so touching and so real. Going from that immensely dark heartbreak and pain to her finding her light again felt like I was going through it right along with her.

Very well read

Read that it was a great story. But it was mediocre. A story of spoiled rich people.

A bit juvenile

I really enjoyed this and could not stop listening. it's a good story and while not overly surprising it's still enjoyable. I'd recommend it if you are looking for a continuous listen of sorts.

engaging story

This story was very interesting to read. I enjoyed it, but at times it was easy to tune out. The first half was exciting, and then it gets a little more predictable as you get to know the characters. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to the characters in different ways. Al in all, a good read :)

Pretty good!

I love Phoebe. She is so vulnerable and strong and wise and also sometimes a real dumbass. The cast of characters that surrounds Phoebe are equally loveable and weird and surprisingly real, considering that they’re fiction.

A story with depth, warmth and humour

Un problème est survenu. Veuillez réessayer dans quelques minutes.

This book was surprisingly….surprising! It should come with a trigger warning that the main character is suicidal at the start and the theme is raised throughout but the story is not dark. The characters are entertaining and often more complex than they seem at first.

I’ve been reading a lot of fluffy books lately to fill the time, and this one was a nice change. Easy listening but with more depth. Highly recommend.

Not predictable

The Wedding People was January's book club pick and it’s rightfully received high praise from our crew.

The story begins with Phoebe, who arrives at a grand hotel where a wedding is set to take place. She is mistaken for one of the wedding guests, since every other person there is for the wedding. As she befriends the bride, the plot dives into the lives of a group of individuals connected by this event.

Phoebe is someone who is grappling with her unfulfilled desires and complicated relationships, and really not in a position to be celebrating love. As she navigates the chaos of wedding planning, she must also confront her own complicated emotions, relationships, and personal desires. The novel explores themes of love, loss, and jealousy, in a dark yet comedic way. I really loved how entertaining the story was. I didn’t want to put it down - but needed to because there was a lot to sit and reflect on. This is another really good example of how a work of fiction can provide you with more introspection than a nonfiction book can.

Read if you like:
• Character-driven stories
• moments of introspection
• complex relationships
• navigating adulthood
• dark & humorous reads

I listen to books primarily during my commute to and from work. The reason I listen is to relax and unwind, and just be entertained. This book definitely met my expectations from an entertainment point of view. I liked the character development and the narrator did a very good job. This book would be a great summer beach read. I would recommend!
