À propos de cet audio

In Upright Women Wanted, award-winning author Sarah Gailey reinvents the pulp Western with an explicitly antifascist, near-future story of queer identity.

"That girl's got more wrong notions than a barn owl's got mean looks."

Esther is a stowaway. She's hidden herself away in the Librarian's book wagon in an attempt to escape the marriage her father has arranged for her - a marriage to the man who was previously engaged to her best friend. Her best friend who she was in love with. Her best friend who was just executed for possession of resistance propaganda.

The future American Southwest is full of bandits, fascists, and queer librarian spies on horseback trying to do the right thing.

Amazing tale

“You might not have a happy ending coming to ya, Hopalong…but if you come to a bad end, it won’t be on account of what type of person you fall for.”

This queer dystopian fiction of an America that’s devolved into another version of a misogynistic Old West revolves around Esther: she flees her village after her lesbian BFF is hanged and Esther herself is about to be forced to marry a man she has no feelings for…because she’s been wrestling with feelings for her dead friend.

She is picked up by The Librarians, a group of rugged women who travel the desert rescuing women and distributing “approved reading materials” to the many small towns in the Southwest. But the Librarians are not entirely what they claim to be, and Esther learns much about life and love along the way.

This is a pretty smartly-done LGBTQ book that tackles the ideas of homophobia—both internal and external—and what it takes to survive in a world that doesn’t like people like you. Romy Nordlinger is a spectacular narrator, as well.

Absolutely adorable

This book is adorable & delightful. I loved Zane Grey as a kid and this book gave me the happy feeling that those did which means it’s infinitely better. A lovely touching Western the way they should be.

Highly recommended!

This is the kind of book that sucks you right in and won't let go. A world that seems tangible. Characters grappling with the things they've been taught, the world they've been forced into, and the desire to make their own path. It's the kind of book that makes it hard to read something else because nothing quite compares. Utterly fantastic.

Not an ordinary Western, excellent novella

Subversive librarians in a dystopian post apocalytic US which has reverted to a old West/Western style patriarchial society. Strong sense of time and place, with well drawn supporting characters, including Cye .

Esther Augustus runs away in a librarian wagon after the public hanging of her lover Beatrix. She is hoping to suppress her 'deviant' tendancies in the safe company of the all female group of itinerant librarians. However, this is a Sarah Gailey book, so we know that nothing will be as expected.

Beautifully narrated.
