Description

Roland Deschain and his ka-tet are bearing southeast through the forests of Mid-World, the almost timeless landscape that seems to stretch from the wreckage of civility that defined Roland's youth to the crimson chaos that seems the future's only promise. Followers of Stephen King's epic series know Roland well, or as well as this enigmatic hero can be known. They also know the companions who have been drawn to his quest for the Dark Tower: Eddie Dean and his wife, Susannah; Jake Chambers, the boy who has come twice through the doorway of death into Roland's world; and Oy, the Billy Bumbler.

In this long-awaited fifth novel in the saga, their path takes them to the outskirts of Calla Bryn Sturgis, a tranquil valley community of farmers and ranchers on Mid-World's borderlands. Beyond the town, the rocky ground rises toward the hulking darkness of Thunderclap, the source of a terrible affliction that is slowly stealing the community's soul. One of the town's residents is Pere Callahan, a ruined priest who, like Susannah, Eddie and Jake, passed through one of the portals that lead both into and out of Roland's world.

As Father Callahan tells the ka-tet the astonishing story of what happened following his shamed departure from Maine in 1977, his connection to the Dark Tower becomes clear, as does the danger facing a single red rose in a vacant lot off Second Avenue in midtown Manhattan. For Calla Bryn Sturgis, danger gathers in the east like a storm cloud. The Wolves of Thunderclap and their unspeakable depredation are coming. To resist them is to risk all, but these are odds the gunslingers are used to, and they can give the Calla folken both courage and cunning. Their guns, however, will not be enough.

Favourite book in the series

I really warmed up to the new narrator in this one. I really enjoyed the story of the Calla and liked the accents.

Wasn't sure I'd enjoy this but it was very good.

Stephen King is the master, and has been for many years. I started with him when Carrie came out, and now have almost his whole library on audiobook--partly because I ADORE Frank Muller's voice, and partly because I always wanted to read the Dark Tower series, but lost my sight in the early 90s.
Now, notice I said Frank Muller, but the narrator is George Guidall, as Frank had been injured in 2001, and died in 2008, so he was unable to complete The Dark tower series. I really wasn't sure if I'd be able to switch midstream from one beloved narrator to another. However, George delivered, and I've now finished the series.

Exciting

This book suffers from some of the problems I think King is known for, mainly too little happening over too many pages, but I can't say it was a bore.

An amazing story!!!

This was one of my favourite books in the series and that is saying a lot considering this is my favourite series from any author. The narration is excellent and the scenes are beautifully written. The story is filled with integrity and sacrifice for the greater good! It’s a must read but you can only appreciate it fully if you’ve read the previous books in the series. Once again Stephen King kills it!

Not a good change of Narrator

Story was good but the narrator wasn't as good as the narrator as the privous 4 books. It was also jarring having a different narrator in the middle of the series, really took the immersion out of the series.

Jarring for listeners of the previous books

The ratings speak for themselves concerning the narrative, but I personally found the new narrator very off putting when it came to the OG ka-tet. Roland and Jake are done well enough, but he fails to recapture the essence of Eddie's fast and witty New Yorker style speech, or Susan's southern twang as effectively as the old narrator. As a result some of their trademark worlds-apart banter falls flat, and at times I couldn't even tell them apart right away.

New Narrator, Same King

I just finished this book today and heard Stephen King's afterword. Sad what happened to Frank. I was very curious why they switched. Best wishes for recovery.

Book is great, Mix is sub par.

The book is another great continuation of the dark tower series. George does a good enough job narrating the story, however it’s not near as enjoyable to listen to as the Frank Muller readings of the earlier books. The post production however is not great. The chapters are not lined up properly with the audible chapter selection. Also there are random spots of about 15seconds or so of silence before some of the chapter transitions, which are quite odd, making it sound like an error occurred. Also one of the characters, which is a robot, is giving dialogue. Sometimes there is a robotic effect on George’s voice put in during editing. However it is only used sometimes… Seems like an odd thing to do, almost like they were indecisive in the editing room.

Beware of the Wolves!

If you enjoyed Wizard & Glass for its Cowboy-ish tones then you will love Wolves of the Calla. The newer narrator is a bit different to get used but his voice does deliver! If you wanted additional story to the Dark Tower, you can read Salems Lot before this book, but it is not necessary (I didn't). I enjoyed this book thoroughly and was happy with the overaching story and how it played out. If you've come this far, then beware of the wolves that are to come!
