2-8. The Cow (Al-Baqarah الْبَقَرة ) verses 204 to 233

  • Résumé

  • Many revelation themes are covered in this part of the Quran. We are almost into the last 3 episodes of Surah Al-Baqarah and I am feeling rather sad that it is coming to an end soon. Nevertheless, let's explore this part of the Quran from verse 204 to 233 where the themes are on God's admonishment of the hypocrites, warning us once again of satan as our greatest enemy, a severe punishment for the children of Israel who have been given clear signs and yet turn their back from God's messages.

God also remind humanity that life as a test and that prophets were sent to us with scriptures to deliver good news and as warners. Our faith will be tested in this life and charity should start from home with our parents, relatives, orphans, the poor and the needy travellers.

You will hear of Allah's command to make fighting obligatory and that it is a sin to fight in the sacred months. Intoxicants are forbidden, charity and donation, the treatment of orphan are encouraged, the rules of marriage, intimacy and divorce are detailed, in this part of Surah Al-Baqarah.

So, do look out for them as you listen to the recitations and its translation.

Sypnosis from The Clear Quran book by Dr. Mustafa Khattab: This Medinian sûrah, which takes its name from the story of the cow in verses 91–121, details the main concepts of the previous sûrah, with emphasis on the qualities of the believers, disbelievers, and hypocrites; Allah’s power to create and resurrect; the enmity of Satan towards Adam and his descendants; as well as Allah's covenant with Moses and the Children of Israel. Several rulings are given in regards to marital, relationships, bequest, jihad, fasting, pilgrimage, donations, debts, and interest. Unlike the next chapter, which focuses on the Christian perception of Jesus, this sûrah dedicates a sizable portion to Jewish attitudes and practices.
