    Brooklyn native, Sean Williams, co-founder of SOLEcial Studies CommUNITY Academy (SSCA) and The Obsessive Sneaker Disorder Podcast, drops in to share his Hoop Dreams Origin Story. SOLEcial Studies is America's first sneaker business and culture academy. Sean and his business partner, co-founder Dee Wells, are committed to creating a better sneaker industry focused on three key words - Appreciate, Educate and Elevate. The academy is supported by legends such as Kool DJ Red Alert and Ali Shaheed Muhammad from A Tribe Called Quest. Through their courses they teach how the industry works, educate students of all ages on what jobs are available in the industry and also teach the history of sneaker culture. They recently launched a course, Strictly For The Ladies, to encourage more women to get involved in the industry. Their Podcast, OSD (Obsessive Sneaker Disorder), is the longest running sneaker focused podcast. Launched in 2007 as a weekly internet call-in talk show it is now available on YouTube and has featured an incredible list of sneaker industry guests.     Ep.90 Dan Peterson, founder of the non-profit Project Backboard, joins Will Gates and Arthur Agee on the Agee & Gates Hoop Dreams Podcast. The guys dive into his origin story and the founding of Project Backboard in Memphis in 2014. Project Backboard refurbishes playground courts in collaboration with artists. They install large scale works of site-specific art on the surface of the courts. Their mission is to strengthen communities, improve safety in the community and encourage multi-generational play. Project Backboard's goal is to inspire people to think more critically and creatively about their environment. Dan reflects on the court that was refurbished in his hometown that ended up changing the course of his community's high school basketball program and was the unknown precursor to his future endeavours. He shares some of his early influences, the first artists he worked with and how things have evolved. Since launching in 2015, Project Backboard has renovated over 100 courts in more than twenty-five States, and internationally in Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Portugal. Dan also shares their initiative Every Court Has a Story which holds contests where people can submit stories about the courts in their communities for refurbishment consideration. Scotty hit the game winning three pointer as part of the NCAA Basketball Championship team that knocked off Grant Hill and the Duke Blue Devils in the 1994 Finals. Corliss Williamson and Scotty Thurman were a hard duo to contain under Coach Nolan Richardson's guidance as the Hogs went 16 - 0 at home that season. Scotty went on to play 10 years of pro basketball overseas before going on to work and coach at his alma matter and with the Senior Boys team at Parkview High School. The Piney Woods School was founded in 1909 in rural Mississippi by Dr. Laurence C. Jones as an all black boarding school with the mission to educate and prepare students for leadership positions. Yusef was a stand-out high school player at Piney Woods where his team went 72-10 and won back-to-back state championships during his high school career. He went on to play college ball at Tougaloo before starting his coaching career. Yusef coached at the prestigious IMG Academy, at the high school and AAU level in Chicago and served as Director of Operations at Iona University before returning to coach at The Piney Woods School.
