Brave New Women with Cecilia Poullain

Dr. Sonia Marshall's story is incredibly moving.  She shares the reality of having a child with cystic fibrosis, the heart-rending decision about having another child, her marriage break-up, bringing up her two girls as a single mother while working full time and part time and her long, hard fight to have a new drug for cystic fibrosis paid for by the State.  Her determination and resilience are a model for us all.

  • Kathryn Brimblecombe-Fox talks about how she became an academic, writer, painter and philosopher focused on cosmology, landscape and existential risk posed by militarized technologies.
    Jan 20 2021

Brave New Women hosted by Cecilia Poullain

Kathryn Brimblecombe-Fox is an academic and a visual artist with long-term interests in cosmology, landscape and existential risk posed by militarised technologies.  She is currently a PhD student at Curtin University, Western Australia, having completed her Master of Philosophy at the University of Queensland in 2017 with her thesis, "Drones and Night Vision: Militarised Technology in Paintings by George Gittoes and Jon Cattapan".

Kathryn is an extraordinary example of someone who combines influences from both her parents.  Her mother, Elsie Brimblecombe, is an academic, writer and painter (and has also been interviewed for Brave New Women) and her father was a reclusive grain grower in western Queensland. While a farmer, Kathryn’s father was also a keen amateur radio operator, a HAM. In the early 1960s he built their first television set on the dining room table and, in a small way, participated in the space race as one of the HAMs around the world who helped track Sputnik 1 for the Jet Propulsion Unit in the US.

Our discussion ranged from the impact of growing up in the vast landscape of western Queensland, on her vision of the world, the influences of her parents and her grandmother, creativity, the role of art in triggering questions, and the current state of the debate on existentialism.

We finish with a far more down-to-earth discussion about the reality of being a single mother bringing up three girls and just how tough it was.

  • Blanca Bernal, carbon scientist, talks about her trip to Antarctica with the Homeward Bound program to develop women leadership in climate change
    Jan 20 2021

Brave New Women hosted by Cecilia Poullain

Blanca talks about her role as a carbon scientist in measuring carbon cycles and their role in ecosystems.

Blanca was selected in the 4th cohort of the Homeward Bound program along with 99 other STEMM women.  The program's slogan is "Mother Nature Needs her Daughters".  It is a 10 year program with the aim of preparing  1000 women to take on leadership roles in protecting the planet.  As part of the program, the women spent a month in Antartica.

She discusses the voyage to Antarctica and the outputs of the program, including a proposal to protect Antarctica and a book for children:  "The Secret Life of Viruses".  She also shares how the program made her force herself to overcome her shyness in order to speak up about the things that are important to her.

She talks about the difficulties of her life as a woman in science, a male-dominated environment, and the brutality of academia as a profession for both women and men.

  • Camilla Borrevik shares her unique perspective on different styles of communication in the climate change debate
    Jan 20 2021

Brave New Women hosted Camilla Borrevik

Camilla Borrevik, a Norwegian anthropologist working with the small Pacific Island states on climate change, talks about different styles of communication in climate change negotiations.
She discusses the Pacific Island style of communication and ways of sharing knowledge, which involves respect, sharing and stories, and how the Fijian presidency of COP 23 allowed people to connect on a completely different level.  As one journalist put it:  "Finally, negotiators are talking like people".

She compares this to the typical, bureaucratic style of communication and interaction that is usually found in climate change conferences, to the difficulties she has had as a young woman  in expressing herself at international events and also to her experience of academia, where criticism and questioning of research can bring people down rather than building them up.

If you would like to know more, Camilla's PhD has been published under the title:   " 'We started climate change': A Multi-level ethnography of Pacific Climate Leadership".

  • Ella Etienne-Denoy, CEO of Green Soluce, talks about how her company fights climate change
    Jan 20 2021

Brave New Women hosted by Cecilia Poullain

Ella Etienne-Denoy, the CEO of Green Soluce, shows us the power of bringing together the public and private sectors in the fight against climate change.

Ella's father is a French diplomat and her mother is Australian. She talks about her childhood, with postings to Belgium, Australia and Germany, and how she needed to adapt to different languages and different school systems.  After finishing school, she did a double degree at both a French management school, ESSEC, and in Germany, and was already interested in strategy, innovation management and sustainability.

When she finished her studies, she thought she was going to work for a large corporation in Germany, but decided to join an entrepreneurial venture: Green Soluce, a start-up in France.  She talks about how she developed a vision for Green Soluce and just kept on raising it until it was accepted by the investors and she was made CEO of the company.

She talks about the highs and lows of being the CEO of a growing company - the long hours and the worry about cash and paying the salaries of 20+ people, but also the freedom and the excitement of seeing her projects come to fruition.

She gives us an outline of Green Soluce's work in bringing sustainability into real estate and urban projects and talks through some of their most important projects.

Green Soluce can be found at:  https://www.greensoluce.com/
