  • Episode 133: JAN KINCL CYCLE RECORDS
    Feb 9 2024

    Hello Decisive Series Subscribers,
Roberto Ingram your podcast host and producer here, I'm thrilled to bring you yet another insightful conversation with a remarkable artist shaping the landscape of electronic music. Today, we have the privilege of delving into the world of Jan Kincl, a Croatian DJ, record producer, remixer, engineer, and live performer whose work has captured the attention and admiration of audiences worldwide.

International media placed Jan among "the most interesting voices coming from the region", and his debut album, a deeply jazz-informed house record "In Plain Sight" recorded with a French keyboard player Regis Kattie, got described as “one of the most significant pieces of regional contemporary dance music” with support from Laurent Garnier, Derrick Carter, Alton Miller, Jazzanova, Volcov, Tony Humphries, Lefto, Claude Young, Jimpster, DJ Bone, Mark Grusane, Kai Alcé and many more.
“An amazingly beautiful album! Very deep.” - Claude Young
“The funk's all over this project!” - Kai Alcé
    “Superb deepness!” - Laurent Garnier

Born and raised in Zagreb, Jan is a product of the late 90s clubbing scene emerging in Croatia. A then-teenager, who embraced the music of the Motor City as a teacher has grown into a recognizable presence in the regional music life. Today, Jan is equally recognized for the music crafted in his Cycle studio, and life-long dedication to the art of DJing. Influenced equally by jazz and hi-tech jazz, he is devoted to a more traditional way of presenting music and feels more aligned with artists not limited by genres or eras. New, old, fast, slow, soulful, or rough. For Jan, the juxtaposition of all this is what DJing is about.

Even though the majority of his work is dance music, this broad approach allowed him to operate in different scenes. Remix for a Brazilian legend Ivan Mamão Conti (Azymuth) on the legendary Far Out Recordings, remixes for a German jazz-funk band Key Elements on Jazzanova’s Sonar Kollektiv label, a solo 12” under CVER alias on Oye Black Label, and a track on Deep Inspiration Show Records’ ‘Family Things Volume 1’ all came out in a period of a single year. The last project to hit 2020, though, were reinterpretations of Radojka Sverko’s ‘Kud Plovi Ovaj Brod’, a special 50th-anniversary re-release of a 1970 chanson classic which holds a unique place in Croatian music folklore.

In 2021, Jan is continuing the string of releases for BBE Records, PDV Records, Get Physical, and Deep Inspiration Show Records. On top of that, a debut record from Cycle Records, his recently launched label, is coming out. Titled "For A Minute", a 12" features two of Jan's original versions, and two remixes from a Chicago house legend Gene Hunt.
In parallel with working on his own music, Jan's had a decade-long run lecturing on the subject of ‘History of Electronic Music’ at the Music & Sound department of United Pop Academy, still ongoing, and is running CYCLE - a studio, and music production company based in Zagreb.
Contact us here to book Jan for a DJ show, live performance, or lecture/workshop

Join us next time for another episode of the Decisive podcast series, where we'll continue to explore the stories and sounds shaping the world of music today. Until then, stay tuned and stay inspired."

  • Episode 131: Kareem El Morr - Interview about Techno
    Dec 22 2023

Hello, music aficionados, this is Roberto Ingram, your trusted guide through the sonic landscapes on the Decisive podcast series. For over a remarkable 11 years, we've been on a collective journey, exploring the diverse tapestry of music together. Today, I'm thrilled to welcome you to a special episode, a rendezvous with the extraordinary Kareem El Morr.

In the heart of Munich, Kareem El Morr, born and bred, discovered his sonic calling at the age of 16 in 2004. Unbeknownst to many, his journey into music was a subtle rebellion against the norm, a clandestine affair that later evolved into an undeniable passion.

While navigating the sonic realms, Kareem's life took an unexpected detour at 23, leading him into the intricate world of film post-production as a sound designer. Surprisingly, the silver screen deepened his love for audio, a love that, while nurtured by film, quietly yearned for the pulsating beats of music.

A three-year residency at MMA served as Kareem's sonic playground, honing his skills and crafting a musical identity that would soon resonate within the underground scene. Now, a resident at "Club Rote Sonne," Kareem's DJ sets weave tales that transcend boundaries, effortlessly blending genres and playing with the ebb and flow of sound.

Despite his modest demeanor, Kareem's musical journey reached a crescendo with releases on Ilian Tape and RFR in 2018, followed by a solo EP on Molten Moods in 2020. The subsequent years saw the unveiling of solo EPs on RFR in both 2021 and 2022, marking a deliberate step into the limelight.

Kareem's sonic palette is a kaleidoscope of influences, reflecting his love for the early 2000s Techno era while seamlessly merging deep and dark tones with a funky groove. His productions, hard and fast, possess an intricate dance between the sinister and the playful, a testament to his refusal to be confined by musical norms.

A discerning ear and an analytical mind, Kareem's DJ sets tell stories with grand arches, refusing to end where they began. He sees himself as a musical vibe provider, steering away from the notion of education and aiming only for the shared joy of music.

Operating with four decks, Kareem is a tech enthusiast, delving into gear and techniques with relentless curiosity. Yet, he remains a maestro of restraint, allowing tracks the space to breathe while utilizing his technical prowess for seamless transitions and a constant flow.

Kareem's commitment to music extends beyond a hobby; it is a meditative refuge and an intrinsic part of survival, a testament to an enduring passion. The journey through sonic landscapes unfolds, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in Kareem El Morr's musical odyssey.
