 The recent episode of 101 The Brown, hosted by Simply Phillip Brown, delves into the interesting twist of Netflix reviving the classic 1987 sitcom 'A Different World' in the form of a sequel. The sequel will focus on the character Deborah Wayne, daughter of the iconic Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, and her journey through college at a historically Black college or university (HBCU). Breaking away from its usual practice of ordering full seasons, Netflix has only commissioned a pilot for now. This strategic move is to allow the creative team to fine-tune the dynamics of the show, meshing the old and the new. The show aims to tackle contemporary issues surrounding college life, identity, and ambition, much like the original. The revival comes at a crucial time, presenting the potential for a significant exploration of the experiences of a young Black woman attending an HBCU, thus adding to the diversity, equity and inclusion conversation in media.
