  • Legends Podcast #735; Sinners (2025)
    Jul 9 2025

Director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan have cashed in on teaming up over the past decade, from Coogler’s debut Fruitvale Station, to Black Panther, to Creed. This 2025 film, their fifth collaboration, sees Coogler double down on Michael B. Jordan - quite literally. Set in the 1932 Mississippi Delta, this genre-defying film sees Jordan play twin brothers who seek to open their own juke joint, only to be threatened by a clan of vampires. The film co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O'Connell, Jayme Lawson, Delroy Lindo and introduces singer Miles Caton in his first film role. Earning $365 million at the box office to date, it is one of the best-received films of the year so far and an early contender for an Oscar nomination. Join us as we sink our teeth into Sinners and let the music move our souls.

  • Legends Podcast #734; Jaws (1975)
    Jul 2 2025

***UPDATED AUDIO TRACKING*** in beef's hurry to leave town and add a cold open he messed up tracking.... it is fixed now! enjoy this cast on your way to the beach maybe???

Fifty years ago, the summer blockbuster was born. Director Steven Spielberg, in his second official turn at the helm, adapted Peter Benchley’s best-selling novel about a New England resort town plagued by a great white shark. Despite production delays and budget overruns, this $9 million “high-concept” thriller starring Roy Schneider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfus took a $477.9 million bite out of the box office and became the highest-grossing film of all time, until the release of Star Wars two years later. Spawning multiple sequels and imitations, this film remains the undisputed master of the seas. But will our hosts fall hook, line, and sinker for Jaws? Or are we going to need a bigger podcast to chew it up and spit it out?

  • Legends Podcast #733; Bone Tomahawk (2015)
    Jun 25 2025

Ten years ago, 2015 was the year of the epic Western. Two films, Alejandro Iñárritu’s The Revenant and Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, clocked in at an average length of 170 minutes and scored a combined 15 Academy Award nominations, winning 4 between them. As a pair, the two films brought in nearly $700 million at the box office. Along with John Maclean’s Sundance darling Slow West, the year marked a return to prominence of the western genre, foreshadowing the next decade’s breakout hits like Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone and Hell or High Water, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Slipping somewhat under the radar in 2015 was the directorial debut of S. Craig Zahler, a prolific author and screenwriter with a penchant for wit, grit, and gore. Zahler cast Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins in a Western akin to John Ford’s The Searchers by way of Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes. When townsfolk are kidnapped by a clan of troglodyte cannibals, four men - the sheriff, a cowboy, a gunslinger, and the back-up deputy - ride out as a posse to rescue them. The indie film quickly earned praise for its direction, dialogue, and disturbing imagery, and has built a cult following in the decade hence. But is our posse of hosts in agreement on how Bone Tomahawk lands? Or will we, too, be split down the middle?

  • Legends Podcast #732; October Sky (1999)
    Jun 18 2025

Director Joe Johnston, who worked in design and VFX for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, is best known for effects-heavy family pics like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Rocketeer, and Jumanji. But in 1999, he tried his hand at the “based on a true story” inspirational biopic genre, based on the early life of NASA engineer Homer Hickam, as told in Hickam’s memoir Rocket Boys. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Chris Owen, and Laura Dern, the film tells the story of a coal miner’s son who was inspired by the launch of Sputnik in 1957 to take up rocketry with a group of friends against his father’s wishes. A critical and commercial success, the anagramically-titled October Sky sounds stellar. But over two decades later, does it still shoot for the moon, or is it a dud?

  • Legends Podcast #730; Better Man (2024)
    Jun 5 2025

One of last year’s most puzzling releases came in the form of a musical biopic chronicling the rise to fame of British pop star Robbie Williams. While following all the usual biopic tropes, this film made one rather noticeable swerve by portraying its star and subject as an anthropomorphic CGI chimpanzee. With Williams providing the narration and singing and Jonno Davies providing the voice and motion capture, the film, directed by The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey, never acknowledges this species-bending premise while playing it straight. Despite Robbie Williams’ mega-stardom in the UK, audiences didn’t swing into theaters to see it there, or in the States where he’s far less well known: the $110 million dollar flick only brought in $22.5 million at the box office. Critics, however, were mostly kind to the film, which received a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 2025 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, winning in nine categories, including Best Film. But will our hosts see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil? Or does Better Man deserve worse?
