From Chicago Roots to NYC Medicine — Dr. Rachel Bier on Endocrinology, Empathy, and the Future of Care

In this inspiring episode of LocalBizCast, we sit down with Dr. Rachel Bier, a brilliant and compassionate Endocrinologist whose journey into medicine is as unique as it is powerful.

Growing up outside Chicago, Dr. Bier was first introduced to endocrinology through her mother, who lived with juvenile diabetes. She witnessed the challenges—and breakthroughs—when her mother joined a groundbreaking medical study at Northwestern University focused on pregnancy and diabetes. That early spark shaped her career path in profound ways.

After moving to New York to help her sister settle in, Dr. Bier quickly fell in love with the city’s culture and stayed, working as a nanny while preparing for medical school. She began at City College taking biology courses. In medical school she originally set on becoming an OB/GYN, but soon pivoted into primary care and found her calling in endocrinology.

In this conversation, Dr. Bier shares:

    • Her life-long connection to endocrinology and how personal experience shaped her career.

    • The grit and determination it took to break into medicine while working and studying in NYC.

    • Why empathy and authenticity are at the center of her patient care.

    • Insights on everything from thyroid disorders to the modern GLP-1 craze for weight loss.

    • Her passion for educating patients, empowering them, and walking alongside them through their health journeys.

Dr. Bier’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and deep care for people. By the end of this episode, you’ll understand why her patients—and now our listeners—adore her.
