    On November 9, 2024 a mountain bike accident changed Callam’s life in an instant. Callam alongside co-host Gary Nickel revisit the rehabilitation therapies key to spinal cord injury recovery.

    Rehabilitation and therapies became a full time job in the hospital. Schedules were made to give structure and direction for each day. For spinal cord injury this included personal care and therapies. In rehabilitation we need to recreate ourselves by learning and then practicing how to use our bodies and refocus our mindset. Whatever it is that has been lost, making any gains and getting back to what we love is all that really matters.

    Gaining the ability to move is amazing and this became Callam’s goal. Mobility allows us to explore, experience and see the world in new perspectives. Once Callam gained mobility it allowed him to move to a rehabilitation hospital. This new environment had such an impact on healing not just physically but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

    On November 9, 2024 a mountain bike accident changed Callam’s life in an instant. Alongside co-host Gary Nickel and conversation with Karen, Callam revisits moving to a new hospital ward where family and friends join him in his healing journey.

    It is very emotional and humbling to reflect on the support that people gave to myself and my family. Support came in the form of cards, messages, calls, gifts, prayers and visits from family and friends. I believe everyone in their lives finds themselves faced with challenges and a need to heal. It is important to know that in these difficult times there is hope. This hope may come in different forms, for me it came in gestures of kindness from others.

    Awaking in an unknown place, connected to tubes unable to move is horrifying. Learning that you can not feel or move most of your body is jarring. The first week in the intensive care unit was scary and numbing. Thoughts go through your mind like, how can I live, am I a burden, am I wanted brings you to low depths. It takes one moment that lifts you out of darkness, it is when you realize that you are loved.
