  • Ep. 26 - From Lions to Lymm: A Coach's Perspective ft. Mark Williams (MWRUGBYCOACHING)
    Jun 25 2025

What happens when grassroots rugby meets social media advocacy? In this captivating episode, we're joined by Mark Williams, a multi-faceted rugby coach whose TikTok presence (@MWRUGBYCOACHING) is helping shine a light on the beautiful game at its foundation.

Mark takes us into the trenches of community rugby, revealing the stark reality that many clubs are fielding fewer teams than a decade ago. "Preston Grasshoppers had six teams ten years ago. Now maybe four," he observes, highlighting the post-pandemic participation crisis. But this isn't just doom and gloom – it's a rallying cry for what makes our sport special.

The conversation weaves through the challenges of player retention, especially that crucial transition from youth to adult rugby. We explore the growing issue of payment at lower league levels, with Mark offering fascinating insights into how clubs like Lymm RFC have bucked the trend by creating exceptional culture rather than opening their chequebooks.

As a technical coach with a specialty in mauling (the self-proclaimed "Maul Doctor" of TikTok), Mark shares wisdom about what grassroots players and coaches should focus on to improve their game. His experience coaching university rugby also reveals how this pathway is evolving as a route to professional rugby, offering late bloomers another chance to get noticed.

The episode isn't all grassroots, though – we dive into detailed analysis of both the Lions' performance against Argentina and England's match against France, with Mark providing a coach's perspective on what worked and what didn't.

Whether you're a player, coach, or passionate fan, this episode captures the essence of what makes grassroots rugby worth fighting for. As Mark perfectly puts it: "There is no better feeling than when you come off a rugby pitch and everything hurts, you're bleeding, covered in mud, and you've just nicked the game."

  • Ep. 25 - Premiership Final, Farrell Returns & Red Bull Falcons?
    Jun 18 2025

Bath's triumph in the Premiership Rugby Final capped an exceptional season as they overcame a determined Leicester Tigers side in a match defined by physicality rather than flashy play. Guy Pepper emerged as the standout performer, demonstrating extraordinary strength to swat away defenders like mere nuisances – perhaps justifying Johann van Graan's earlier comparison to Richie McCaw.

Controversy swirled around referee Carl Dixon's decisions, particularly Julian Montoya's yellow card and Dan Cole's questionable sin-binning for a committed charge-down attempt. Meanwhile, the aerial battle proved decisive with Tom de Glanville and Will Muir neutralizing Freddie Stewart's normally dominant presence under the high ball. Despite Leicester's late comeback attempt, Bath held firm to secure a well-deserved championship.

Beyond the final, significant developments are reshaping English rugby's landscape. Red Bull's imminent purchase of Newcastle Falcons brings excitement and potential transformation, with their track record of building developmental pathways rather than simply acquiring stars. Owen Farrell returns to Saracens on what appears to be a player-coach deal, suggesting his transition toward the next phase of his career. Meanwhile, England's training squad reveals extraordinary depth in the back row, with established internationals being squeezed out by emerging talents.

Looking ahead to summer rugby, the Under-20s World Cup presents an opportunity to witness tomorrow's stars. England enter as favorites with an unprecedented 16 players already boasting Premiership experience – a testament to the strength of England's development pathway. Join us for live coverage as we bring insights into these future stars across multiple platforms throughout the tournament.

  • Ep. 24 - RMOB Awards Night Special
    Jun 11 2025

The Premiership semi-finals delivered rugby drama at its finest, with Bath and Leicester emerging victorious through contrasting but equally compelling performances.

Bristol Bears produced near-perfect first-half rugby at The Rec, with Ellis Genge setting the emotional tone and James Dunn delivering a standout performance in the engine room. Their dominance was embodied by Calaveti Ravouvou, whose electric running constantly threatened to tear Bath apart. Yet Guy Pepper's heroic breakdown work kept Bath within striking distance at 13-6 down.

What followed was a Bath renaissance straight from the All Blacks playbook - twenty minutes of unstoppable rugby that saw Hill, Thoukakota, Muir and Obano cross the whitewash. The introduction of Miles Reid proved transformative, with the underrated flanker making over twenty tackles in the second half alone. Bristol's valiant effort ultimately succumbed to Bath's superior firepower in a 34-20 defeat.

Leicester's triumph over Sale showcased rugby of an entirely different flavour. The Tigers shocked everyone by out-muscling Sale at the scrum, dominating the aerial battle, and neutralising George Ford through relentless pressure. Adam Radwan's exceptional finishing ability provided the attacking edge, including a spectacular diving score that demonstrated why Leicester will be dangerous opponents for Bath in the final.

We conclude with our annual awards, crowning our team of the season with unanimous selections like Thomas du Toit at tighthead, while debating positions where competition has been fierce. Murray McCallum claims our Outstanding Prop award for his sensational sidesteps against Saints, while Henry Pollock receives Character of the Year for bringing personality and changing perceptions of what rugby players can be.

This season has transformed the Premiership's trajectory, with young talent emerging, attacking rugby flourishing, and genuine competitiveness throughout. As we look toward the final, we're already excited about what's to come next season - but first, there's the small matter of Bath versus Leicester at Twickenham.

  • Ep.23 - Painting the Premiership Playoff Picture
    Jun 4 2025

The curtain falls on the Premiership's regular season, but the drama has only just begun. In this episode, Dave and Rory dissect a Round 18 filled with surprising performances, emotional farewells, and the final playoff picture taking shape.

Bath's youthful squad showed remarkable courage against Saracens, with debutants Tyler Afaya and Barford crossing the whitewash, offering a tantalizing glimpse into their future despite the 36-26 defeat. Meanwhile, fans at Welford Road witnessed a poignant moment as club legends Dan Cole and Ben Youngs made their final regular-season appearances in Leicester's commanding victory over Newcastle.

We explore how university recruitment might be reshaping player pathways after discovering talents like Oscar Usher, question why so many quality Premiership players remain clubless despite strong CVs, and analyze whether weakened team selections diminished what could have been a more dramatic final weekend.

The conversation turns heated when examining Harlequins' defensive frailties against Bristol, with 29 missed tackles raising serious questions about attitude and coaching direction. Contrast this with Sale's clinical efficiency, though their over-reliance on George Ford could prove their Achilles heel in the playoffs.

Looking ahead to the semifinals, we predict Sale to edge Leicester in a forward-dominated affair, while Bath's all-court game should overcome Bristol's resurgent attackers. But knockout rugby has taught us to expect the unexpected – just ask Leinster about underestimating English opponents with attacking flair.

Stay tuned as we cover international tours, women's rugby, and the Lions throughout summer. The Rucks, Mauls and Overballs journey continues with no breaks – just like Dan Cole at the scrum.

  • Ep. 22 - Premiership Partings, Pollocks Pulse & Bordeaux Blitz
    May 28 2025

The landscape of global rugby stands on the precipice of transformation with the announcement of a 16-team Club World Cup starting in 2028. This landmark decision promises to answer the question that's lingered in rugby circles for decades: how would champions from different hemispheres fare against each other when the stakes are highest?

As we celebrate this forward-looking vision, we also honor those who've defined an era of Premiership excellence. Dan Cole, Mike Brown, and Alex Goode – three titans of English rugby – have announced their retirements, taking with them decades of experience and countless memories. Cole's remarkable longevity as a tighthead prop defies modern rugby's physical demands, while Brown's competitive fire and Goode's graceful skillset leave indelible marks on the sport.

The European finals delivered contrasting tales – Bath's commanding Challenge Cup victory over Lyon showcasing their forward dominance and clinical execution, while Bordeaux's triumph over Northampton in the Champions Cup final was marred by early injuries and post-match controversy. The throat-grab incident involving Jefferson Poirot and Henry Pollock ignited debate about sportsmanship versus personality in the modern game. Meanwhile, with the Premiership's final round approaching, we analyze the crucial matchups that will determine playoff positioning and potential champions.

Beyond results, we explore the possibility of "reverse sabbaticals" with Northern Hemisphere players testing themselves in Super Rugby – a concept that could further break down barriers between rugby's traditional power centers. Join us for thoughtful analysis, passionate debate, and the celebration of rugby's evolving global character.
