A high tech bandage combining the power of biosensors, microfluidics, and machine learning capably detects signs of wound infection and inflammation some 3 days before clinical signs appear. Developed by bioengineers at Caltech, the California Institute of Technology, and surgeons at the USC School of Medicine, the iCares device not only continuously monitors the wound fluids for reactive oxygen, nitrogen species, pH, and temperature, but it removes and facilitates healing by keeping the tissues dry. It transmits data to a smartphone app using Bluetooth.
Following preclinical studies in diabetic mice, the research team tested the smart bandage in 20 patients with chronic wounds due to diabetes and suboptimal blood flow. Their smartphone algorithm is able to classify wound severity and healing potential. Their study now appears in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
