Sandrine Host from Belgium discusses her preparations for the W50 1500m and 5000m in The European Championships in Madeira next month. Sandrine is an incredible athlete. She's ranked number 1 going in with a 1.17 half-marathon, 9.49 3000m and 35.12 10k in the last year. We chat about her hopes, training; past and family. Thanks to her for doing this as she was nervous about her English. The episode naturally doesn't have the detail in answers and flow of a native speaker, but it's nice to hear about her hopes and open her story up to a new audience.

  • Marathon advice.
    Aug 15 2025
With Dublin Marathon approaching, I decided to do an extra episode taking the best bits from marathoners I've previously interviewed. There's fantastic advice in here for any marathon. They discuss such things as their experiences of marathons, mistakes, training tips; dealing with bad days and what to do on the day itself. Contributors (with time slots if you're busy) include:
    1. (1.30 -17.45) Mick Clohisey: Dublin Marathon winner and 2 time Olympian with a 2.13 pb discusses his good and bad experiences and training.
    2. (17.45-29.00 )Jenny Hitchings: WR holder at W55 with a 2.45 talks about London Marathon, pacing tips and training/life balance.
    3. (29.00- -37.27 ) Ann- Marie McGlynn: First Irish lady in Dublin Marathon in 2024 as a masters runner. She has a 2.29 pb and runs at top senior international level . She talks about her amazing achievements and training pace advice.
    4. (37.27-50.34) Martin Kelly M60, has done all the Dublin Marathons with a sub 3 in his day. Filled with great planning and race day tips.
    5. (50.34- 59.45) Colin Griffin: Olympian racewalker who has a 2.23 marathon and is an expert on injury advice particularly tendons which he discusses here.
    6. (59.45- 1.04.41 ) Maria McCambridge is a Dublin Marathon winner and Olympian. She chats about the boost from a new coach who focused on easy days and variation which had been alien to her.
    7. (1.04.41-1.09.55) Michael Counsel started marathons at 4.20, but within 3 years, he was down to 2.59. This is how he did it.
    8. 1.09.55-1.15.25) Paul Larkin gives info on a great, club marathon group training idea.
    9. (1.15.25-1.19.32) Kevin Campbell got 3rd in the Manchester Marathon this year in 2.17.38. Here he chats about his early days running over 3 hours and his errors in over training.
    10. (1.19.32- end) Josh from Flycarb discusses taking Sodium Bicarb to aid marathon performance which is what he did for London Marathon this year. Available at FLYCARB | Fueling Your Dreams with High-Performance Sports Nutrition with 10% off with code MASTERS10.

    Jun 6 2025

Zac Ashkanasy (Australia) became the M50 1500 WR holder in March hitting an incredible 3.57.70. It was felt at the time that he came out of no where, but he has a 3.43 as a senior and a 1.49 800m. A very private guy who shuns social media and only posts basic information on Strava. So, we're very lucky to get his story here about the WR night, his training and past experience. Please like and share this episode. Thanks.
