The Island of Doctor Moreau by H. G. Wells is a classic science-fiction story that explores the realm of scientifically created human and animal hybrids. The main character, Edward Prendick, is left on an island after being rescued by a self-serving captain and an animal trader named Montgomery. The island, owned by a Dr. Moreau, is filled with frightening half human, half animal creatures that shock and appall Prendick.

Alexei Ivanovich is a Russian tutor working in Germany. The story begins with an inventor speaking to a group of men about the unbelievable time machine that he has built. The men scoff at this idea and do not believe his incredible tale. The inventor, wanting to prove his theory, produces a miniature time machine that disappears into thin air, to the amazement of all.

The classic science-fiction fantasy novel A Princess of Mars, written by Edgar Rice Burroughs is the first in the series that takes place on the planet Mars also called Barsoom. Mars is seen as a hot, dry planet that houses many kinds of alien races including the green Tharks and the Red Martians. John Carter, a former Civil War soldier, is mysteriously teleported to Barsoom when he explores an ancient cave in Arizona.

Nowadays, it would not seem an insurmountable task to make it around the world in 80 days. Yet, when Jules Verne published this novel in 1873, this was a phenomenon that many doubted was remotely possible. We are at first introduced to Phileas Fogg, who lives in London and has just fired his valet for silly reasons. Fogg then hires Jean Passepartout who, at the time of hire, has no idea of the adventure that his new boss will take him on. Fogg learns that it is now possible to travel around the world - starting and ending up in London - in only 80 days.

The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane tells the story of the American Civil War through the eyes of a Union Army soldier, Henry Fleming. After running away from a battle, Fleming realizes that he must overcome his fear and earn his place next to his comrades by becoming brave and courageous. And so he rejoins his regiment, and, to his delight, none of his fellow soldiers has realized that he ran away, and they mistakenly think that his accidental wound is actually a bullet wound.

Sun Tzu's book, The Art of War, is a detailed outline of how to win a war, taken from principles in Chinese science and philosophy. This ideology is divided up into three different parts and is written in a circular way with the first and last chapters relating to the same ideas and tying it all together.

Stephen Dedalus, a poor boy in Ireland at the end of the 19th century, gives up everything, his family, social ties, and his church, to devote his life to his passion - writing. The novel goes through the boy's life as a student in a very strict, Catholic boarding school in Ireland, and how that upbringing shaped his childhood and family, including an intense, politically charged argument over the Christmas dinner table. The listener follows Stephen through his preteen and teenage years, growing more poor as the years go on.
