Jesus spoke tenderly of a priceless pearl in his sermon about the kingdom of Heaven. Jesus said that he spoke in parables to hide the secrets of the kingdom from some and reveal them to others. This does not mean his parables are full of esoteric information that only a select few can grasp. Indeed, Christ's enemies often understand exactly what his parables mean; the problem is their refusal to trust his teaching about himself and God's kingdom.

The biblical King David of Israel was known for his diverse skills as both a warrior and a writer of Psalms. In his 40 years as ruler, between approximately 1010 and 970 BCE, he united the people of Israel, led them to victory in battle, conquered land and paved the way for his son, Solomon, to build the Holy Temple. And thus David's royal family begins, extending all the way to Jesus Christ, King of the Jews.

Let's go back in time to the story of Creation and a study of the earliest men in the Book of Genesis. The question is: did God create us or did we come from a sort of cosmic soup billions of years ago? Since Creation has obviously taken place, I believe there is a Creator. He is God. In the Bible, we will see that God does not speak verbally to everyone, but chooses specific people to talk to, and asks them to go forth as prophets for him. Those were usually men of great faith.

His authoritative approach to justification and righteousness serve to capture the interest of believers today. It is appropriate that his examples of holiness be presented afresh to our generation. After all, history repeats itself. The indulgences and iniquities rampant in Paul's day appear in churches today. False teachers overlook the sins of neglect.

As a young foreigner in Egypt, Joseph succeeded against overwhelming odds. Uprooted from his family in Canaan and sold as a slave in Egypt, he made the best of unpromising situations. Sold to Potiphar as a field hand, he worked diligently and soon became overseer of Potiphar's entire estate. Though innocent of any wrongdoing, Potiphar's wife accused him of attempted rape, and Potiphar threw him into a prison house.

Abraham was truly a great man. He was also a friend of God. Yes, that's right: he was a friend of God. In fact, the Lord himself makes this statement: "But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend." Not even Moses, whom God had spoken to face-to-face, was given the designation of "friend." Indeed, God referred to Moses as His servant. So how was such a relationship possible? How could a man, made of the dust of the earth, become friends with an all-powerful, all-knowing supreme being?

The Apostle John referred to himself as "the Disciple Whom Jesus Loved". That is because he was the best friend of the Lord. John knew so much about the love of God and the power of that love.
