The closest Alex Harley has ever been to a zombie is on his game console. Trapped in a dead end job and spending his weekends gaming, Alex is coasting through life at his own pace. But one fateful weekend, he agrees to go hiking with his pal Mike. Mike's girlfriend, Elena, is bringing her friend Lucy along and that is good enough reason for Alex to endure grueling hikes along a mountain range in Wales.

Aldiss tells the tale of mankind's future over the course of forty million years. Each of these nine connected short stories highlights a different millennia in which man has adapted to new environments and hardships.

In a future where the Earth has been savaged by overpopulation and over-farming, robots are considered more valuable than humans, and sand must be altered to create artificially fertile soil. Ex-convict Knowle Noland, the hallucinating sea captain of the Trieste Star, finds himself wrapped up in a plot to incite a global war that will wipe out millions. War, it seems, is the only way to drastically reduce the population and create a better world for those who survive.

When Alex receives a distress call from a group of soldiers being attacked by zombies, he wants to help. But when he and Sam arrive at the location of the attack, they're too late to do anything. All they find are dead bodies, dismembered zombies, and an army Land Rover. But inside the Land Rover is an item that was en route to a mysterious destination known only as "Bunker 53." Close examination of the item and its accompanying documents reveals its importance. And also the fact that some people are willing to kill to stop it reaching its destination.

Dragged away from the Magic Kingdom by the same Red Caps that helped Bloom hunt him down, Patrick Deen comes out of his injury delirium somewhere on the North Carolina coast, one thousand miles from Ben. In a desperate bid to save Lucy, Alex goes in search of the secret government facility on Apocalypse Island. If the scientists there created the virus, then surely they have a cure. Alex will go to any lengths to get it, even if it means risking his life in a building full of monsters.

Decades ago, the Visitors descended on Earth. They claimed to bring peace and prosperity. Their real goal was the total subjugation of humankind. But humanity did not give up its only home without a fight. After a devastating war, the Visitors were driven back to Mars. Their millions of willing human collaborators were left behind. The task of hunting down these former alien collaborators and bringing them to justice falls to Federal Recovery Agents like Nathan Foster.

2110. Earth is suffering major resource shortages, and the impact of climate change is peaking. Colonies have been established on Mars and the Moon, but these cannot hope to sustain any more than hundreds of citizens. Attention has turned to the need to discover an extra-solar colony world. Scientists have identified the means of creating a wormhole in the space-time continuum, which would allow interstellar travel. However, to do so they must first physically transport one end of the wormhole to where they want it to be, so setting up a wormhole will always rely on physical travel.

Operation: Wildfire. Deliver a batch of vaccine to two army camps. For Alex and his friends, the task sounds simple. But in a zombie apocalypse, even the simplest tasks are dangerous.
