Eldene McGrady is the mother of two teenage children. Taylor, a strapping six-foot 15-and-half-year-old, and his little sister, Patty, who is 14, just 11 months younger than Taylor. Eldene is suddenly widowed due to an accident in which her husband, Jake, is killed. Her grief is such that she just can't continue their life in Baltimoret, selling all her holdings and deciding, along with her children, to plan and join a wagon train and move West to the Oregon Territory.

Tracks from Nowhere takes the listener into the remote and impoverished coal-mining community of New River Gorge, West Virginia. The year is 1936. Hank O’Neill, a ruggedly handsome coal miner, bears the burden of a promise that threatens not only his life, but his marriage to the lovely, Louise as well. She is discontented with living in poverty and is desperate to escape; but in the isolated Appalachian Mountains of post-depression America, a way out is difficult to come by.
