This somewhat autobiographical novel is based loosely on Charlotte's love for Professor Heger in Brussels and is a forerunner to Villette. Young William Crimsworth is hired by the headmistress of a girl's boarding school. Eventually, he appears to be falling in love with her. She asks him to help tutor Frances, a young teacher.
