The Capture of Father Time tells the story of Jim, the son of an Arizona cowboy, and an expert with the lasso. When Jim visits relatives in the East, he amuses his cousins with his lasso tricks. One day he takes a horse to a pasture in the countryside, where he tosses his lasso at imaginary targets. To his surprise, it catches an invisible object. On close inspection, Jim sees that he has caught an old man with a bald head and a long white beard, dressed in a white robe and carrying an hourglass. It was Father Time!

A wealthy Boston woman named Claribel Sudds consults Dr. Daws, a wise old chemist who dabbles in magic, about her desire for a stage career. In the short story The Girl Who Owned a Bear, Jane Gladys Brown’s mother leaves her in the care of Nora the maid when she goes shopping. While Nora is busy in the pantry, Jane Gladys works on her embroidery, until a mysterious little man arrives and gives her a large book titled Thingamajigs. When she opens it, the pictures come to life and appear in the room, including a monkey, a donkey, a leopard and a bear. When her mother returns, all of them jump back into the book.

"The Glass Dog" is about a wizard who lived on the top floor of a tenement building, always studying and pondering. He had all the books and formulas of all the wizards who had lived before him. Many folks came to him for help about their troubles, and these interruptions irritated him, so he thought of getting a dog to chase them. The glass blower next door makes him a glass dog, he enchants it to life and at first it serves its purpose well, but many complications arise.

This story is about the king of the polar bears who lives in the far North, where all the animals fear him. One day, some men arrive in a boat, shoot him, and take his pelt. But by his own magic, he rises again, and the seagulls bring him feathers for a new coat. The polar bears, however, were not impressed with their king’s new coat, and one of them challenged him.

I truly love this book, The Marvelous Land of Oz, by Lyman Frank Baum. It brings up so many memories of childhood when I read it for the first time. Through my life, I have heard this book referenced many times due to its popularity and significance. I hope this book continues to impact the lives of others the way it has impacted mine.

Published on June 20, 1916, with full-color and black-and-white illustrations by artist John R. Neill, it is significant that no one from Oz appears in the book until its climax; this is due to Baum's having originally written most of the book as an original fantasy novel over ten years earlier, in 1905.
