Two hundred years ago, slavery had the Southern United States firmly in its evil grip. Around four million African Americans languished in the most appalling of living conditions, their lives controlled by people who saw them as objects. Because of segregation, Black travelers couldn't eat, sleep, or even get gas at most white-owned businesses.
