La storia si svolge intorno ad una famiglia con tre bambini, che viene costretta, a causa di problemi economici, a trasferirsi in campagna, accanto ad una ferrovia. Intorno alla ferrovia si snodano gli avvenimenti comuni e non dei tre ragazzini. Il libro, e sempre leggero, tocca il cuore dei lettori grandi e piccoli con una delicatezza che non toglie nulla all’intensità dei sentimenti suscitati.

Il vento tra i salici (The Wind in the Willows) è un classico della letteratura per l’infanzia pubblicato nel 1908. I protagonisti sono Rospo, Tasso, Talpa, che rappresentano la società rurale inglese dell'epoca. L'autore, Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) lo scrisse per il figlio che soffriva di gravi problemi di salute e che morì poi suicida a venti anni. Nel 1909 Grahame si licenziò poi dalla carica di segretario della Banca d'Ighilterra.
